The rest of the week passed slowly and painfully as I hardly ate, was ignored by my dad, hated myself, and cut. The next two weeks went by very similarly as I got thinner, sadder, and lonelier. I began to feel as if there was no hope for things to get better. I started to think that my life was pointless and everyone would just be better off if I killed myself. It wasn’t as if anyone loved me anyone. No one needed me. I was just a burden to everyone.
But then, one day, a boy came up to me. I was sitting on my hands again at lunch, like I had come to do everyday to prevent myself from eating. I didn’t recognize the boy; I hadn’t ever seen him before. He had light brown hair and had strands of blond mixed in. His eyes were the color of a bar of dark chocolate. His skin was tan and he was tall and thin, but muscular. He was incredibly handsome.
I couldn’t fathom why he was sitting with me. He was probably new and didn’t know that I was a loser yet. I looked down at the surface of the table and waited for him to leave me, just like everyone else had. But he didn’t. After about five minutes, he spoke to me.
“Hi,” he said, his voice strong and confident.
I stared at him.
“I’m Scott,” he told me.
I didn’t say anything.
“Well, okay then. I’ll just eat my lunch then,” he told me. “Tell me, mystery girl: why don’t you have a lunch?”
I didn’t reply.
“Well, you can share mine,” he said, handing me half of his turkey sandwich.
I gulped, wanting terribly to eat it. Turkey was my favorite. But I told myself that turkey, no matter how delicious, was not going to help me get thinner.
“Aren’t you hungry?” he asked.
I just looked at him.
“Well, I’ll just leave it there in case you change your mind,” he told me.
Surprisingly, he stayed for the entire lunch period. When the bell rang he took his trash and my half of the sandwich and dumped them in the trash. As we walked out of the cafeteria he spoke once more to me.
“So, mystery girl, I never learned your name.”
He smiled at me.
I walked away.
