“Oh my gosh,” I breathed.

Rory held the gun in his shaking hands, with a look on his face that suggested he was going to be sick.

“How could you?” I asked, completely horrified.

Rory swallowed, still looking sick, but didn’t say anything.

“Tell me why the hell you’d do this, you monster!” I yelled.

“You don’t understand!” he said angrily. “I didn’t have a choice!”

“Yes you did! You decided to kidnap my mom and then you decided to pick up that gun and shoot my dad!”

“I didn’t want things to happen like this!” His voice was full of regret.

“How were things supposed to happen then, Rory?” I asked.

“I just wanted to be the perfect boyfriend,” he whispered. “That’s all I wanted.”

“What?” I didn’t understand how this related to everything.

“Addie was really upset one day, so I asked what was wrong. She told me that your mom was sulking around all day, stealing away all of her dad’s attention. I told her she could have all of my attention, but it wasn’t enough. She said that she wished your mom would just disappear. I didn’t plan on making her disappear, but I thought that maybe I could scare her into being less sulky. And I thought that maybe if I did that for Addie, she’d love me as much as I love her. So, I came to your house one day when you and Addie were at school and your dad was at work. She was here alone. I found the spare key and went inside. I swiped a knife from your kitchen, just wanting to shake her up a little with it. All I ever wanted to do was shake her up a little.” Rory’s voice quavered a little and a tear slid down his face. He took a moment to compose himself before continuing.

“I went into her office,” he said. “I showed her the knife and she begged me to leave her alone. I told her she needed to stop being such a baby. I told her that she was making her whole family suffer by getting so hung up on everything. I told her that she was ruining Addie’s life. I made it clear that I wasn’t leaving until I was sure that she’d behave. I poked her a little with the tip of the knife, not hard enough to cut her, but hard enough to freak her out. But she got so scared that she screamed louder than I’ve ever heard someone scream before. I was startled by it and somehow the poke turned into a stab. The next thing I knew, she was laying on the carpet surrounded by blood. She coughed a little and then she was gone. Just like that.” He had to stop speaking then. He couldn’t say anything else because he was crying so hard.

I didn’t know how to reply to his sudden confession. I was stunned by hearing the details of how my mom had died.

“Was it fast?” I said softly. “Did she go quickly?”

Rory nodded.

“At least she didn’t suffer for long,” I whispered, speaking too softly for anyone to hear me.

We all sat in silence for a few minutes, not knowing what to do. Finally, I spoke up.

“We have to tell the police,” I said.

“No!” Rory shouted, suddenly outraged.

“But we have to,” I told him.

“No,” Rory repeated. “No one can know. That’s why I had to shoot your dad. I knew that if he told you, you’d tell the police. And the police can’t know. They can’t.”

“I can’t just stay quiet!” I shouted.

“I know,” he said. “I know that you won’t stay quiet voluntarily, so I have it all figured out.”

“You have what all figured out?” I questioned.

“What I’m going to do with you,” he replied.

“What are you going to do with us?” I said, starting to fear for my life.

Then Rory pointed the gun straight at me.
