Scott’s eyes widened as he dropped to his knees. Addie and I rushed over to him.

“Scott,” I said. “Hold on.”

He fell onto his side.

“Just hang in there,” I said. “It’s going to be okay.”

He coughed and blood spilled from his mouth onto the ground.

“Come on, Scott,” I said. “You’re going to be okay.”

“No he’s not. He’s going to die,” Rory said from across the room. “Just like you.”

He then picked up the gun and pointed it at me.

And then Addie stood up, stood right in front of me.

“No,” she said. “You can’t kill my sister.”

“I can and I will,” he said. “Get out of my way.”

“No,” she said as she stepped towards him.

Rory’s hand shook as she walked slowly towards him.

“Rory,” she said quietly. “Don’t do this.”

“I have to,” he said, his voice quavering.

“No you don’t.” Addie’s voice was soft and comforting.

Rory looked as if he was entranced by what she was saying.

I decided that I had to get out of there. Rory probably wouldn’t notice since Addie had captured his attention. I slipped my hands under Scott’s arms and started pulling him towards the door. We moved slowly through the doorway and then I stood up. I grabbed one of Scott’s hands and began running, dragging him along. I knew it couldn’t have been comfortable for him, but I was so desperate to get us out of there alive that I didn’t care.

Suddenly Scott coughed loudly and blood burbled out of his mouth.

Rory heard the loud noise and his head snapped towards us. He started towards us, but Addie stepped in front of him, trying to reason with him.

“Shut up,” I heard him yell. “Get out of my way!”

I knew I should keep running, but I felt frozen in place.

Addie refused to move out of Rory’s way and Rory’s face began to grow red with anger. She reached up slowly, trying to take the gun. But Rory became suddenly furious and he hit her across the head with it. I could hear a loud cracking noise as the gun made contact with Addie’s skull. She fell to the ground and blood immediately started pooling around her head. She didn’t move.

And then I was running again, pulling Scott behind me. Adrenaline rushed through my veins and I ran faster and faster. I heard Rory running behind me, trying to catch up.

My heart raced as he started gaining on me. I knew I should drop Scott’s hand and leave him. He was only slowing me down. But I couldn’t bring myself to do it. I loved him too much.

And then Rory was right behind me. I tried to run faster, but my muscles screamed in protest. I was trapped.

A gunshot rang out and suddenly I was on the forest floor next to Scott. A felt an intense pain in my left side, worse than anything I’d ever felt. I weakly pressed a hand to where I’d been shot and felt blood pouring out of me. I felt weak and dizzy and sleepy despite the incredible pain. I reached over and grabbed Scott’s hand as the world started to fade.

The last thing I heard before the world went black was another gunshot.
