It was a short kiss; we didn’t make out or anything. We had simply touched our lips together. And it had been perfect. I couldn’t have imagined a better way to get my first kiss.
After the kiss we had looked at each other for a moment, then started walking, our fingers intertwined. As we walked I felt this strange feeling inside. But it was a good feeling. And I realized that the feeling was happiness. I hadn’t felt that feeling in a long time. In fact I thought that I would never feel it again. But Scott made me feel happy. And so I looked at Scott and I spoke.
“Thank you,” I said, my voice cracking a little.
Scott didn’t seem surprised at all that I had spoken. It was like he had known I would.
“You’re welcome,” he whispered to me, knowing what I was thanking him for. And then he chuckled to himself. “It’s amazing that I still don’t know your name.”
“Kitty,” I told him.
“Kitty,” he repeated. “That’s a nice name. It suits you.”
I smiled.
We walked for a while more, not talking, just enjoying being together. Then, when we were about five minutes from my house, we reached Scott’s house.
“Well, here’s my house,” he said. “I’m going to go inside, I guess, unless you want me to walk you home.”
I shook my head, not wanting to make him walk any more than he had to.
“Alright. I’ll see you tomorrow then, beautiful.”
He kissed me on the cheek and went into his house.
As I continued home I felt like I was floating. I was just so happy, happier than I’d been in such a long time. I couldn’t believe my luck that Scott, the most handsome and kind guy I’d ever met, actually liked me. No, loved me. Everything was perfect for once.
I felt on top of the world as I turned to corner onto my street and froze when I saw my house. My breath caught in my chest and my heart started beating rapidly. There were policemen and police cars surrounding my house.
I ran from the corner straight to my house, needing to get inside and see what was wrong. Just as I reached the door a large hand grabbed onto my arm and yanked me away. I spun around and found myself face to face with a very big policeman.
“You can’t go in there,” he told me in a very loud, deep voice.
“I live here,” I informed him in the loudest voice I could manage.
He turned to another officer and asked him if I could enter. While he was looking away I slipped from his grasp and dashed inside, into the living room. There I found my dad and Addie sitting on the couch and a police officer talking to them.
“What’s going on?” I asked them.
They all looked at me, but said nothing.
“Tell me!” I screamed.
The policeman took a deep breath and then spoke.
“Your mother is missing.”
