Chester’s POV
“It’s going to be okay, don’t worry about it.” I reminded Grace as she gripped my hand.
“Chester I’m really not sure about this. I don’t like the thought of what could be down there.” She whispered in a frightened toned, I squeezed her hand and we walked precariously into the water, the clear turquoise liquid splashing between my toes.
Scuba diving was something I had wanted to do for years but was never in the right moment to actually follow through. It was something I could tick off my bucket list and I wanted to share this with Grace. I knew she would enjoy it eventually but I understood her fear of taking the first few steps.
“Will you swim with me?” She asked as she dipped further into the sea, her body tensing in the water.
“Of course I will; come on.” I smiled reassuringly as I took hold of her hand and locked it in mine.
With our masks on and oxygen attached to our backs we delved into the clear unknown sea. I looked over to Grace who seemed to be a little more comfortable paddling in the water and I actioned for her to follow me as we went further down. She looked at me with fear evident in her eyes and I put my free hand’s thumb up as she began to kick down to join me.
It was worth waiting all these years for, to see all the fish flash before me. They didn’t seem fazed by our presence as we swam closer towards them. Grace’s hand was still intertwined in mine and I could sense her smile as she pointed out all the colourful fish who I was oblivious of their existence until today. After a while she let go of my hand to follow a cult of tropical fish and I watched as she stared at them in awe.
It was probably one of my favourite sights, seeing Grace swim elegantly behind a deep blue ocean. I watched as her long tanned legs kicked gently against the water creating ripples in the blue. Fish of all different shapes, sizes and colours floated by her and she’d watch them as she swam past and occasionally grab my attention so I could admire them too. As beautiful as the sea and its inhabitants were Grace was by far the most beautiful of them all and once again I was reminded of my luck.
Grace’s POV
It was truly magical being deep underwater surrounded by all these majestic creatures. I was suddenly fascinated by this undiscovered world and I never wanted to leave. I looked over to Chester who was taking a photo of himself and some fish, I laughed at his immaturtity and quickly grabbed his hand and dragged him over to some coral.
We swam through the sea beds, dipping and diving whilst our fingers were interlocked. Again, it all felt surreal, this not where I had imagined I would be ten years ago and I had eternal debt to pay to him, for making me the person I was today.
We swan back up to the surface of the sea, pulling off my mask and looking around at where we were. I couldn’t believe I had actually done that, scuba diving was something I could’ve never pictured myself doing and I was amazed at myself for trying something new. It wasn’t healthy to stay too grounded and Chester had taught me that.
“I’m proud of you.” Chester smiled, pulling me up onto the shore and kissing my cheek softy.
“Thank you, for making me do that- you were right, it was incredible .” He nodded in agreement and we walked in a comfortable silence back to the place we had called home for the week.
I opened the door and was hit with a sudden wave of nausea, of something inside of me wanting to get rid of everything that belonged in my body. Something I couldn't control, a foreign blast of illness and desperation. I sprinted to the bathroom before being sick into the toilet.
“Grace? Grace, you okay?” Chester’s faint call was all I heard before my mind went blank and I fell to the floor.
