I woke up to a cold bed, the side next to me empty. I hulled the duvet off my body, slowly removing myself from the comfort of my bed.
I walked into Lottie's nursery, opening the door slightly so I didn't wake her, a few beams of sun shining through the crack of the door. My eyes followed the carpet till they landed on the silhouette of Chester cradling our child in his arms, swaying back and forth slowly.
The sweet melody of his tranquil tone filled the atmosphere, the husk of his morning voice gently soothing my daughter to sleep again.
For a moment I just stared, in awe of the life I was living, blessed to be able to call it my own. Just looking at the two people I loved the most in the world made my eyes cloud over and I grabbed my phone out my pocket and took a picture of the two; causing Chester to turn around and look at me.
"Hey you," He whispered, walking up to me and kissing my lips gently.
"How long have you been up with her?" I asked, taking Lottie in my arms.
"About three four hours." He stated, running a hand through his hair.
"She wasn't sleeping?" I questioned, looking down at Lottie concernedly, kissing the top of her head.
"She was, she drifted straight off as soon as I held her I just couldn't put her down." Chester admitted shyly, yawning as he looked at his watch.
"Go get some sleep Ches, I'll be back in bed soon." He nodded in agreement, stroking Lottie's hair before walking tiredly out the door.
"See what I mean about daddy loving you? What I said the other day about how much he cares for you and that was before he even knew you. You're so lucky, Lottie Mae, you're so so lucky." I held her against my chest, my hand rubbing her back as I shut my eyes, my hands shaking as I thought about everything.
It had all come rushing back to me, it had all just flooded into me and I couldn't escape my thoughts. So I placed Lottie back down in her cot and walked over to the rocking chair which sat opposite her bed, the sun shining on its wooden frame sparsely.
I thought back to the place it had all begun, that time I was walking down the street and how if I took one more step to the left, to the right, behind or in front, if my foot had moved two inches forward then I'd never be staring at my daughter, with the love of my life in the bedroom next door. And all this is crazy, and all this is amazing and I can't comprehend any of it. It almost feels like I'm living someone else's life.
I felt my eyes get heavy, I closed them and what felt like hours later I felt two strong arms wrap around me and pull me out of the chair and place me down on a comfier surface, pulling sheets over my body. They kissed me on the head, their fingers running gently through my hair. They told me they loved me and laid down next to me, their fingers intertwined with me. My eyes fell heavier and the last thing I remember, before drifting off into a deep sleep was the comfort of the body next to me never leaving my side, not once.
I woke up, for the second time, to an arm wrapped securely around me and I buried my head into Chester's shoulder, his hold on me supporting me, mentally more than physically.
"I'll go make us some breakfast." Chester stated, leaving the bed and walking down the hall, peering his head into the nursery before heading down the stairs.
And so I waited for a while, awaiting to hear the sound of Chester cursing in frustration, or the sound of crashing pans or the sweet scent of cinnamon to fill the house. After twenty minutes of no sound or smell I pulled on one of Chester's over-sized sweaters and made my way into the kitchen.
