The words sounded extremely strange coming out of Lily's mouth to James. He didn't want her to go down that road. The same road one of his best friends, Sirius Black had gone down frequently. If she had said this in different circumstances, like if they were at a ball or hanging out with friends, he would've laughed and brushed it off, however, under these circumstances, it was dangerous. When Sirius used to get drunk, he would drink a lot then cry for long times before falling asleep and waking up to a wicked hangover and that was the result after he had been drunk a couple times before. But, for Evans, who had probably never drank before, it wasn't exactly predicted to be a smooth ride. James stood frozen, he knew he should do something to stop her but before he could, Lily brushed past him and downed the glass of firewhiskey. He came to his senses.
"Evans, this isn't exactly the best idea." He told her heading towards her when she had drunk her second cup.
"Honestly Potter, I thought you would encourage me like your extremely annoying self." Lily scorned, downing a third.
'Ouch' he thought to himself, 'didn't know I was that bad.' "Evans, this isn't exactly the greatest idea," he took away the firewhiskey from her. "That's better, how about we talk instead?" He suggested.
"What's there to talk about? Huh? It's not like you care with your perfect life." Lily spat. Double ouch. "Perfect Potter. With his perfect friends and his perfect grades." Each word hurt James on a new level and he just kept reminding himself that Evans was drunk. Lily noticed his hurt expression and guilt washed over. "God, I'm so sorry. I didn't mean that. Honestly, you should just ignore me now." Lily said softly, engulfing him in a hug.
"Evans, we can't have you drinking. It'll ruin your perfect record." Lily chuckled in disbelief.
"I think it was ruined the moment McGonagall asked you to tutor me. But at least there's another thing we can check off the.. um.. the thingee... the thingee thing, ya know, the write-y, note-y thingee."
"You mean a list?" James asked her.
"Yeah that. Now let me hug you, you're very warm." She told him sleepily.
James didn't want to be harsh but he also didn't want her to sleep on the floor after she practically drowned her grief in alcohol. They also couldn't have her doing stupid things. When Sirius did this, Remus and him would force Sirius onto bed. They quite literally carried him away before he would march up to Dumbledore's office and give him advice for maintaining his hair to be soft and silky.
Not knowing what else to do, James used his arms that were wrapped around her waist and threw her over his shoulder. Lily was now upside down and laughing while she repeatedly hit his back, which hurt. James gently put her on his bed, which her tired-drunk self allowed. He tucked her in his duvet and just as he was going to get the other blanket from in front of the window, he felt a small hand clasp his wrist.
"Thank you." Lily whispered with a small smile that he returned.
"If you ever wanna talk, I'm here." He reminded her.
"I think I might like you more than I intend to let on." She told him as James sat with his back to the side of the bed and Lily's small hand in his. "Good night James." She yawned but before her sleepiness consumed her she placed a gentle kiss on his cheeks and then fell asleep as James visibly reddened.
His brain was going hay-wire as one sentence repeated over and over again.
'Merlin's pants! Lily Evans just kissed me!!'
