"Well, well, it seems our dear sister hasn't learned her lesson,"
a voice drawled the moment I stepped inside our grand home. I glanced up to see Amelia, her purple hair cascading around a face so beautiful it could captivate anyone, her purple eyes gleaming with a hint of amusement.
"Good day to you too, sister," I replied evenly, continuing my walk towards Father's office.
"Do you truly love His Highness, Alyssa?" she suddenly questioned, causing me to stop in my tracks and turn to face her.
"I had intended for Father to be the first to hear my news, but it seems you might find this even more delightful," I stated, watching as confusion flickered across her perfect features.
"I have broken off my engagement with His Highness. Does this news please you, sister?" I continued, observing her right eyebrow arch in disbelief.
She clearly didn't believe me. "You're not jesting with me right now, are you, Alyssa?" she asked, a hint of suspicion in her tone. I offered her a small, genuine smile.
"That depends on what you choose to believe, sister. But please remember that I am quite serious in my words," I told her calmly, slowly approaching her. I gently brushed an imaginary speck of dust from her elegant dress.
"And besides..." I paused, my smile widening slightly. "...don't you think I lack the proper qualities to be the future Empress?" I met her gaze steadily. "Now, if you'll excuse me, I must inform Father of my decision." With that, I turned and continued towards my father's office, leaving Amelia standing there, utterly bewildered.
Amelia Silverton, the darling of our society, had followed in our mother's footsteps, proving to be a sharp businesswoman. And naturally, while also taking lessons on how to be a future queen... after she had fallen in love with the male lead of the story.
In the original book, she was supposed to be the male lead's first fiancée, just like in so many other stories. But because the male lead loved me, and the Emperor didn't want his son to be unhappy, he secretly changed the official announcement and made me the future Crown Princess instead.
Everyone had been shocked... truly shocked.
Because Alyssa... the original Alyssa... was just an ordinary girl who didn't quite fit the esteemed Silverton lineage. The only unique thing about her was her golden eyes, a trait no one else in our family possessed. She hadn't inherited any of the family's usual talents or looks, which was why she wasn't well-known until she suddenly became the Crown Princess.
I didn't even know much about the original Alyssa since she died so early in the book.
The author had only described her as a kind-hearted girl with a strong sense of responsibility. She wasn't naive or easily pushed around; she was simply herself. But things changed when she became the male lead's fiancée. She didn't love him; as I said, she only felt a strong sense of duty towards the engagement.
She believed that everything had been planned before she was even born, and since she lacked some of the skills and qualities expected of our family, she worked incredibly hard. However, her true character remained hidden, and I was determined to uncover it bit by bit.
Who was Alyssa truly? Because I doubted she was just the Silverton family's black sheep.
The one who had no business sense, no skill with a sword, and wasn't even considered beautiful.
That was how she had been described in the book.
I knocked on my father's office door three times before Butler Seimon opened it.
"Young Lady Alyssa... what brings you here today?" he asked blandly, his tone reflecting the way the original Alyssa was usually treated.
"I wish to have a word with Father," I told him, and he raised a questioning eyebrow. "The Grand Duke is occupied. If you wish, I could relay your message," he offered, but I gave him a polite smile.
"I have a personal request to make of him. Perhaps he could spare a few moments to hear me out," I said, and he glanced inside the office, presumably to ask for permission.
After a brief pause, his gaze returned to me."The Grand Duke has granted permission. You may enter, but you have only ten minutes to present your request," he informed me before stepping aside.
"Thank you," I said, walking past the butler while secretly rolling my eyes.
This just proved how low Alyssa's standing was within the household, even as the Crown Princess.
Because the Silverton Duchy was a neutral ground... a neutral home. All our titles and influence outside the mansion held no sway within its walls. Our family members were expected to be strong and self-reliant, not relying on external protection or titles.
And Alyssa was ranked last... I didn't even have a personal maid! Because I supposedly lacked the qualifications to have one.
But it was alright... I understood it. Alyssa was known as the black sheep, and that was the reason for this less-than-ideal treatment.
"Alyssa, you wished to speak with me?" I heard Father's deep voice as I stood firmly before his imposing desk. "Father, I have a request that only you can fulfill," I stated, and he raised a thick eyebrow, his gaze sharp.
"What is it?"
"I wish to break my engagement with His Highness. Please, I implore you," I said, bowing deeply at a ninety-degree angle to emphasize my seriousness.
Thud
The sudden sound made me uncomfortable. I slowly looked up and saw Father staring at me in utter shock.
My eyebrow rose slightly as I noticed his fallen teacup, the source of the unpleasant noise.
"Could you repeat that?" he asked, his voice slightly shaky, his hands trembling visibly.
I offered him a small, serious smile, my eyes conveying the gravity of my words."Please persuade the Emperor to break my engagement with His Highness. This will be my first and last request of you, Father."
