"Miss Vina! Still awake?"
The head maid's voice, just as I'd expected, drifted through the wood of my door. Good thing I'd asked Virgo to stand guard; a strange feeling had warned me she might try something unexpected.
And now, the perfect moment to start my plan.
My plan to find either the subordinate or Kahli – whichever one wasn't locked away by that seal– and end them before they could end me and take over the world.Being a descendant of a goddess, I'd learned, made me a target for those hungry for power. Thankfully, Ben's father was out of the picture for now, unable to watch me so easily here in the Northern Kingdom. But another dangerous, greedy being was still out there.
"I really must get back to my room now, seeing as you and your people must have checked everything already. Please excuse me, Miss Vina. Good night."
click clack
The sound of the head maid's shoes faded away, and the door slowly creaked open, revealing Virgo, who slipped inside quickly.
"Virgo! Is it time?" Cancer asked as soon as she was in, her face showing no emotion as she looked at everyone.
All eyes in the room turned to her, the silence so thick you could almost touch it. No one dared to speak.
"It is," she finally said, "but before we leave, we must tell Master the truth now." Her words made everyone in the room tense.
Hearing her, I felt a pang of being left out, confused about what else Virgo could possibly mean."Wait... there are more secrets I need to know?" I stammered, trying to keep my voice steady as I looked at my companions, who were all quiet, avoiding my gaze.
"I think we need to wait until tomorrow night for our plans, Master," Virgo said as she walked closer to me.
"Master," she began, her voice serious, "do you know you have magic?" I glanced at the other Zodiacs, who remained silent, just staring at me.
"I think I did, that time I chanted to clean Father's poison," I explained, "but I quickly forgot about it. Nothing supernatural has happened since then."
"Maybe that's because your magic was held by an enchanted spell placed by your grandmother when you were five," she explained carefully. "Magic often shows itself around that age. For the spell to work, another magical person had to give up their own magic, and this has been done for thousands of years."
"I'm confused," I said. "If my magic was truly held by this spell, how could I read a spell and heal my father?"
"That wasn't your own magic," Aries pointed out. "You just used the magic in the spell book. Because you have magic inside you, even if it's spelled, you can use the book."
I was stunned. How could I take in so much at once? More truths spilling out, it felt like too much.
"And one more thing, Master," Aquarius added softly, "Your grandmother is still alive."
Hearing this, I froze in my bed, blinking hard. Didn't they just say she went away so my magic could be tethered?
"How is that possible if she used herself to place an enchanted spell on my magic?"
"Placing a spell doesn't mean dying," Aries explained. "Like my husband and the other Zodiacs, they are alive. When the person holding them dies, they die too."
"If you want to break the enchanted spell, of course, your grandmother will be free," Pisces said with a kind smile. "We believe that if our plan works, you will be able to live the life your ancestors couldn't." Her words touched something deep inside me, and tears slowly started to fall as I imagined the pain and sacrifices of my ancestors who shared my fate.
"You will always be our master," Mini said happily. I couldn't help but smile through my tears.
"And do you remember this?" Sagittarius asked, holding up the spell book, the same one I'd used to heal my father.
"You can use this book to protect yourself and fight off enemies," Taurus added as I took the book.
"The spell to free your grandmother from the arcane binding is in that book. But it will only work if you have done what you need to do," Virgo said, handing me a locket.
"Your grandmother left this for you. She told me to give it to you when you were old enough to understand everything, as if she knew you would be the one to stop Kahli and save your family," she added. I slowly opened the locket and saw a picture of a beautiful woman smiling. A small laugh escaped me as I looked at it.
"We look the same," I whispered, unable to stop smiling even as tears still streamed down my face.
"You look just like her, Master, and we are sure she is very proud of you."
