Y/N Scamander fluttered her eyes open, a beam of light from her window blinded her sight.

7th of August 1971, the day when she finally turns 11, which means that she will receive her Hogwarts letter and go to Hogwarts like her brother —Theodore— he is one year older than her.

The sound of Tina (her mother) was calling her name from the living room. Her voice travelled through the hall as she kicked her covers off to get up before pushing open her bedroom door.

"Happy birthday, Puff!" her mother and father cheered as she walked down the stairs to see a birthday cake in the middle of the table. Confetti flew around her head, drifting delicately down the wooden floor.

Puff. A nickname her brother gave because one time when she was 4 years old, Newt brought home a pygmy puff for the first time. Theodore thought that it resembles her, with the obnoxious fur and how they'd eat anything they can find.

Personally, Y/N disagreed.

"Thank you so much!" she exhaled while grinning like a madman. "Where's Theo?"

"Still asleep, I'll wake him up," her mother called.

"Guess what?" her father, Newt asked. Y/N raised her brows, though she knew what he's talking about. "Your letter is here!" he waved a beige-coloured parchment in between his fingers in the air. "You're growing up faster than a salamander, this household will be boring without you two."

"Dad, you have mum," she rolled her eyes playfully, "Besides, you're always traveling. The one that should complain is mum."

Newt sent a sympathetic glance at her, "I'm sorry dear, I promise I'll make it up to you."

"No! Of course it's okay. I understand you're busy and I don't want to interrupt your job," she smiled, "Aren't you the 'famous-magizoologist'?"

Newt laughed and side-hugged her, "We'll wait for Tina and Theo to get down here so we can get all your supplies for school, okay?"

"Alright, in the mean time, can we eat the cake?"

"Now all you need is a pet," Tina said, "What do you want? a cat, owl, mouse, or frog?"

"I think I'd love to have an owl. It'll be handy if I want to send you letters," with that, her mother lent her a pouch of galleons to her palms.

"I'll be waiting in the cafe at the end of the street if you're done, dear. I know it will take a long time for you to choose an owl," her mother said chuckling slightly, knowing damn well she's right.

"Okay, I'll se you guys later," then she opened the door to the owl emporium. The sight was wonderful, she could see various kinds of owls with multiple colours.

She walked around, looking at every owls. One was white with a few brown patches; another had a shiny black feather, she almost chose that until she found one that was standing on a branch. It was a beautiful full-white snow owl. "I think I'll get this one. How much is it?"

"37 Galleons," said the keeper.

"Here."

Y/N walked out; holding her owl's cage. She smiled down at the bird, its large eyes looking innocently at Y/N. She had the urge to hug the animal but fought back to do so.

"I'm going to name you... Winter. I think it fits you. Your feathers' like snow and you're a snow owl, I bet you could camouflage in a mountain of snow!" she talked casually to her owl.

Y/N find herself talking to animals quite often —though she would never admit it. She feels like it's easier to pour her heart and soul to them rather than a person. One won't know what's the other's judgement, but she knew that creatures keep secrets.

"Hey, Winter is a beautiful name for an owl!" a sound of a boy was heard before her.

Y/N turned around reluctantly to saw a boy with sandy-blonde hair. He has scars on his face; however, they were fading, making it looked pink. "Oh- um did you hear that? I mean- me talking with an owl?"

"Yeah, sort of," he chuckled, "Don't worry I talk to animals too —more often than I should— I tend to think that they understand us better."

She smiled, "Yeah, my father thinks like that too. Do you need anything? Sorry, I'm standing outside the shop," she quickly moved away from the emporium's entrance behind her.

"I was just searching for Hogwarts school robes and saw you here," he said looking at her.

"Oh you're going to Hogwarts too? What year?"

"I'm a first year," replied he.

"Me too!" she grinned happily hoping to be friends, "School robes is in that store," she pointed to a shop three blocks away across the street.

"Puff! Puff!"

Y/N turned red at that nickname. Inhaling sharply, she spoke: "That's my brother calling, I'll see you around."
