I hear Josh yelling at me that Alex is finally awake. I quickly hurried over to them. "Alex?! How are you feeling??" I ask.
"Like shiiiit! My back hurts like hell!" She groans.
"Well yea…" Josh says but shuts up when I glare at him. Now that she's awake we can get moving. I met Mary Ann's gaze and she understands what I'm thinking.
“ What happened? Why do I feel like crap?” Alex asks.
"A man stabbed you. I got him." I say quickly not regretting what I did at all.
"YOU WHAT?!" Alex exclaims, raising her voice. I look away silently. I did what I had to.
"We need to get moving." I call to Mary. She nods hesitantly and begins to gently pick up Alex. Making sure she doesn't damage the stitches or the wound anymore. Josh helps her. We begin walking farther away from the museum, deeper into the forest, following along a road. Mary comes to a stop at a shredded campsite.
"I'll go ahead and make sure it's clear. " I say as I begin to walk towards it.
Josh stays behind with Mary and Alex. As I walk up the camp site I see two tents torn apart. Blood splatters on the inside with bloody handprints. I look in the trash to see if there is any canned food. There's nothing, just wrappers and empty tins. I walk over to the van with flat tires and open it up. There's a box of canned fruit. Enough for us three for about a week. I quickly turn around, readying my bow as I hear movement behind me. I meet the gaze of a young white german shepherd.
Lowering my bow I look around for the owners. Looks still too young, they must have left not too long ago. He watches me curiously. "Sit?" I say, wondering if he was ever trained. He sits. Huh, strange. I keep looking through the van to find a vest for the dog. He was being trained for the k-9 unit. That explains it. Well. I guess I'll take care of him too. I set my backpack down on the seat and pull out my spare bandana, it's rainbow. After adjusting it I slip it onto the pup.
"I'll take care of you from now on… I'm sorry you had to go through all of this.. I'll name you Espen." I say softly. He wags his tail slightly. Grabbing his vest, I put it in my bag. I pick up the box of canned fruit and begin walking to Mary.
"Come." I say as I walk. Espen stands and trots over to me. Mary looks at me surprised as I return with food and a pup walking beside me. "Found canned fruit.. Should last us about a week or less, and this little guy is Espen. I'll be taking care of him." I continue, glancing down at Espen as he stands looking around.
She nods and we all walk past the campsite carefully to not let Alex see and get panicked. When the sun starts to go down we stop. Mary gently sets Alex down and sits beside her. Josh joins them, as he opens a can and splits it. I sit on my own, Espen sitting next to me. I take one of the smaller cans and I begin to eat, sharing it with Espen.
