I was at the grocery store buying ingredients I would need that night to make dinner. I had always loved cooking and baking, but cooking for one sometimes two always felt like a waste of time.
I pushed the cart towards the supermarket exit. My blood pressure begins to drop when I see none other than Nate and his mother walking towards me.
"Oh hey Nia. What a coincidence?" The big fucker says with a cocky smile. So he wants to act like a nice boy in front of his mommy eh?
"Mom this is Nia, our new neighbor from across the street. She's the Irish girl I mentioned?"
"Nia, what a beautiful name, almost as beautiful as you! How nice to finally meet you." I was taken aback when she gave me a little hug.
"Oh it's lovely to meet you too Mrs. Jacobs." I smile at her.
"Ugh that accent! I could listen to you read the phone book!" She said, her eyes were twinkling. "Are you feeling better? Nate mentioned you were a little under the weather the other day."
I glanced at him. "I'm much better, and I can't thank you both enough for thinking of me."
"Well I know how busy you young people are but you have to come over for dinner this week, I know Cal would just adore you!" She looks at me hopefully.
Fucking great. I can't say no.
And Nate knows it. Did he sic his mother on me?
"I would love that but I'm only coming if you let me bring desert!" I reply with a very convincing fake smile.
"How about tomorrow night? I can't wait to get to know all about you. I can already tell you're going to fit right into the family." She smiled up at Nate who looked like he could shit sunshine right now.
"I can't wait! Just tell me a time and I'll be there." I reply with fake enthusiasm.
"Mom I'm going to help Nia put her bags in the car, I'll find you in a sec. Oh and don't forget to grab the steaks." Nate says steering me out with him.
I grit my teeth.
"That performance was...chefs kiss." He said puckering his lips and kissing his fingertips.
"Your mother seems like a pretty nice lady. But I really wish she had swallowed you when you were in liquid form you fucking shit bag." I unlock my trunk and watch him load in my groceries.
"Stop talking dirty." He smiles.
"What deserts do you people like?" I say flippantly.
"What can you make?"
"I make a mean ass apple pie. Swiss roll, upside down cake, chocolate eclairs. Pick one." I glare at him.
"Go with the apple pie."
"Text me with a time tomorrow. I'll see you then." I sigh getting into my car.
"I'm looking forward to it." He grins.
"I bet you are!" I give him the finger and speed off.
The next evening I arrived at the Jacobs house, my hair was half up half down, I was wearing a rust brown turtle neck sweater dress, a cute black leather belt around the waist with black thigh high boots, a fake as fuck smile and a big apple pie in an earth ware Le Creuset Dish.
Marsha answered the door with a lot of enthusiasm. I felt her appraising me at all times. Her eyes scanned me every inch, like I was some kind of fertile breeding cow she wanted to buy for her son.
