Half-Truths

Chase didn't know what to say that could get him out of that situation. But he had to say something quick. All eyes were on him. At this point, saying anything was better than saying nothing. So he said the first thing that came into his mind. He nervously said, "Oh. I must've gotten confused. I was thinking about another day. Not yesterday. I don't even remember what I was doing yesterday! Sorry guys my head has just been all over the place, haha." Chase instantly processed the nonsense that came out of his mouth and felt extremely embarrassed. His lies caught up to him, and it made him look like a fool. Everyone else was looking at him with concern and confusion. To divert the attention elsewhere, Chase quickly said, "Anyways... I'm gonna go upstairs to get the video games ready. I'll see you guys there." He quickly ran up the stairs and into his room.

      Not long after, Josh and Jaden followed him, and Charli was left in the kitchen alone. She was very concerned about her boyfriend's well-being. Several thoughts went through her head. She thought to herself, "Did he actually forget what he was doing yesterday? That doesn't make sense... why would he tell me that he was with Josh and Jaden when he wasn't? " The more she thought about it, the more confused she became. She didn't want to think the worst. She had to know what was going on.

    Josh opened the door to Chase's room, and Jaden followed. They saw Chase struggling to find a video game disc. His room was very messy. There was clothes all over the floor and his bed was messy. It would be very hard to find anything in a room like his. Chase was beginning to get frustrated. He kept shouting out loud to himself "Where is it?!" Jaden looked down and coincidentally found the disc Chase was looking for on the floor. He picked it up, and said, "Is this what you're looking for?" Chase looked at the disc and sighed with relief. He grabbed the disc from Jaden's hands and thanked him. Chase put the disc inside the video game console, and they all started to play. Chase kept staring at the screen, not wanting to think about what happened earlier. It was silent for a few minutes. Just the sound of the game coming from the speakers.

    Josh looked at Chase and could tell something was bothering him. He wondered if it had to do with his odd behavior earlier today. So, he asked him, "Hey dude, is everything okay?" Then Chase nervously responded, "Y-yeah. I'm good, why do you ask?" Josh replied, "Dude, I can tell that something is worrying you. We can talk about it if you want. It might make you feel better"

  Chase looked at Josh sadly. He wish that he could just tell Josh everything  he was going through, but he just couldn't. With a secret like his, he didn't know what kind of reaction he would receive. Nonetheless, his emotions kept getting stronger and stronger. He just had to say something. But, he didnt want to say anything stupid again like he did earlier that day. So he put some thought into what he was going to say. He knew he couldn't tell the truth.  Not the entire truth at least. But maybe he could tell a half-truth... After a small silence, he said, "I was somewhere else yesterday. But I can't say where. It's complicated. I'm sorry that I made it seem like I was with you guys yesterday. It wasn't right. I felt really bad for not being able to hang out with you. But I wanted to make it up to you guys. That's why I invited you guys today."

Josh pat Chase in the back, and said, "It's okay dude. Just know you can always count on us." Chase smiled and replied, "I'm glad to have a friend like you." Then they went back to playing video games. And everything started to feel normal again. But, little did they know, Charli was listening to their conversation behind the door. She heard everything.
