INT. MERCER LIBERTY HIGH SCHOOL - AUDITORIUM - EVENING
James sits to the side of the stage. Students move props around him, as he studies his script, whispering his lines.
MR. MOUSER - Everyone! Before I leave, call time for tomorrow is six. And yes, that's six p.m for those of you wondering.
INT. JAMES' CAR (MOVING) - EVENING
James drives home and pulls into his neighborhood. RING... James answers his phone on speaker.
JAMES - What's up?
KEVIN (V.O) - I heard someone got a call from Richard the other day.
James doesn't pick up on Kevin's facetious tone.
JAMES - Yeah, he's coming to opening night.
KEVIN (V.O) - Oh, I know. I just spoke with him. Thanks for telling me!
JAMES - I know... Sorry.
KEVIN (V.O) - You get one call from an agent and you've already forgotten about me.
JAMES - Okay, mister dramatic. I was gonna surprise you after class.
KEVIN (V.O) - Speaking of, coming in early tonight. I wanna polish your accent before your big night.
James checks his phone and ponders.
KEVIN (V.O) - Is that good, or...?
JAMES - No-no, that's perfect. I'll head there now.
BEEP... James gets an incoming call from "Mom".
KEVIN (V.O) - See ya soon.
James answers. Edith sounds elated.
EDITH (V.O) - Honey! You almost home?
JAMES - I think I'm going right to class instead.
EDITH (V.O) (disappointed) - Oh... Okay, sweetie. That's not a --
JAMES - Is that okay? I can swing by if not.
James stops at a stop sign. He awaits Edith's answer to decide which way he's going -- home or class.
EDITH (V.O) - No! Don't be silly.
James turns on his blinker and pulls onto his street.
EDITH (V.O) - Of course that's okay. I know you have your big show you gotta get ready for.
JAMES - Okay. Also, don't worry about dinner. I'll grab something on the way.
EDITH (V.O) - That's perfect. I haven't even gotten a chance to cook yet.
Edith speaks with an overcompensating tone, clearly lying. James slows down as he approaches his house.
JAMES - You sure?
James inches along and looks into his home. Through a window, he finds Edith holding the phone with one hand and grabbing CHOCOLATE CAKE off the table with another. She brings the cake into the kitchen.
EDITH (V.O) - Yes. Now go practice with Kevin, and I'll see you later.
He looks to his house guilty, before driving off.
JAMES - Alright, I'll see you tonight then. Love you.
EDITH (V.O) - Love you too, bye.
James hangs up. He stares ahead, unsure of his decision.
KEVIN (PRE-LAP) (clapping) Yes! That's the one right there.
