I pressed my ear against the heavy oak door, listening to the muffled chaos outside. Candy and Toby---by how they introduced themselves to me earlier---stood like sentinels on either side of me, ensuring I didn't interfere. Earlier, I'd heard Slender's booming welcome, followed by a thick silence. Then LJ's taunting voice had echoed through the wood, joking that I was a captive and that I should choose to stay here rather than return to a shack with a "maniac."
Since then, the hallway had gone cold and quiet.
"Why do you even want Jeff here?" I asked, sliding down to sit on the floor. "He isn't exactly the type for dinner parties."
"Well, it's quite a long story, princess," Candy said, his blue hair shimmering under the chandelier light.
"C-C-Candy, I d-don't think you s-s-should---" Toby stammered, his body twitching rhythmically.
"I know Slender didn't prohibit it, Toby. But, be a gentleman for once to a lady who asks so politely." Candy smirked at me and sat cross-legged on the floor, though his eyes never left the door.
"It started six years ago," Candy began. "After Jeff went truly insane and slaughtered his parents. The police caught him, sentenced him to death, but he turned that execution into a massacre." He said as if he is just tellling a kid story. "He fled into these woods and ran straight into Slenderman and Rogue. They wanted to bring him here-to make him one of us-but he was too far gone to follow orders. He attacked them both."
"He attacked Slender?" I whispered. It sounded suicidal, but for Jeff, it sounded right.
"He did. Rogue fought him to a standstill before Slender called it off. Slender doesn't give up easily, though. He's been watching Jeff from the shadows, waiting for a way to bring him in--the reason is I don't know---until LJ found you. And Jeff actually showed up to 'save' you."
"He is not here to save me," I countered, hugging my knees. "He's just keeping his prey fresh until the right time to kill me. That's what he said.."
Candy laughed, a dark but not unkind sound. "Still, you're the first human he's allowed to breathe for this long." He tilted his head, studying my face. "Hey, have you always been like this?"
"Like what?"
"So sad. Like you've forgotten how to be happy."
I looked at the floor, I did not expect him to notice that. "I don't know how to smile genuinely anymore. After losing my parents, my only friend... after losing myself... there's nothing left to feel." But I remember smiling at Jeff back then despite it was weak.. yet still a glimpse of genuine smile.
"But you smiled earlier," Candy noted. I went to disagree, but he held up a hand. "You still know how to be happy, Y/N. You're just forcing yourself into the dark."
Before I could respond, Toby jumped. "T-T-The door! I-It's open!"
I scrambled up, but Candy's hand caught my arm. "If you want to be happy, princess, stay here. This mansion can be your castle."
I slowly pulled my arm away, meeting his gaze with tired eyes. "Happiness isn't what I'm seeking. Only death." Then I bolted for the door and threw it open.
"Jeff?"
He was standing there, covered in fresh blood-likely from the police department. "You fucking woman! I told you no-"
He stopped mid-sentence as I slammed into him, hugging him with a desperation that surprised even me. I didn't care about the blood on his hoodie. I was just relieved that my "death" had come back for me.
"The fuck are you doing? Get off!" He shoved me back, his face twisted in a snarl. Slender and the others stood behind him, watching the exchange. "I can't even leave for an hour without worrying!"
"So you were worried?" LJ teased.
"No, clown! I'm worried one of you will steal my prey and kill her before I get the chance!" Jeff barked. He turned his glare back to me. "What were you thinking, running to this place?"
"I didn't run. I had a headache, I passed out, and I woke up here." I explained while slowly leaning away from my sudden hug, but not entirely letting go
"Don't fucking lie to me!" He lunged, his hand clamping around my throat as his knife hovered inches from my eye. I didn't flinch. I didn't even blink.
He is not lying, Jeff. I have told you this already. Slender's voice acted like a cold bucket of water.
"Slendy's right! I brought her!" LJ added without any worry that will make Jeff hate him more.
"Fuck!" Jeff released me, his chest heaving with frustration. "Why are all of you taking her side?"
"Because it's the truth," EJ said calmly.
Jeff didn't apologize. He just grabbed my hand-his grip so tight I felt the bones in my wrist grind together. "Let's go."
"I-It hurts..." I winced.
"You're hurting her, Jeff," Rogue warned, reaching out. Jeff slapped her hand away.
"So what if I am? I'm the one who's going to kill her anyway!"
"Bastard," Rogue growled, her claws sliding out. "You never change."
Enough! Slender's command felt like an explosion in our minds. We will talk inside.
Suddenly, black tendrils lashed out, wrapping around Jeff's waist and arms before he could react. He was hoisted into the air, my hand finally falling free from his crushing grip.
"Fuck you! Put me down!"
And just like that we were forced back into the mansion, into the grand dining room. Slender sat at the head of the long table, with Jeff pinned into a chair bounded by the tendrils.
"Now what?" Jeff spat.
I want you to stay here. Both of you.
The room erupted. "What? You want that animal living here?" Rogue shouted. Ben looked skeptical, while LJ just chuckled about the "entertainment" value.
"Nice offer, Slender," Jeff sneered. "But NO. Now get these things off me!"
He looked at me then, his eyes cold and devoid of any humanity. "She's just my toy. I made a promise to kill her once I've had my fun, once I've seen enough fear in her eyes. That's it."
A toy. The word hit me harder than his knife ever could. I'd spent a week cleaning his house, eating with him, waiting for him... and I was just a toy he planned to break. Of course, what else I expect him to think of me? Something he cares? Think Y/N, you are just a victim and he is a killer. He never cares, probably you are experiencing Stockholm Syndrome right now.
"Yeah," I whispered, the first tear hitting the mahogany table. "I'm just a toy."
"Princess?" Candy asked softly.
But I couldn't stay there. I couldn't let them see me break. The same thought run through my mind, a mindset not to be seen crying by everyone or they will think of me as weak. I turned and ran, my feet flying over the marble. I heard them calling my name, heard Slender's roar, but I didn't stop. I threw open the massive front doors and stepped out into the fog.
Only as the heavy doors slammed shut behind me did I remember what they said.
Once you step out, we vanish. And you are lost. Forever.
I turned back, but there was no mansion. No lights. Only the suffocating, screaming silence of the Dark Forest.
