The fluorescent light above flickered with a rhythmic, dying hum, casting long, sickly shadows across Chief Daniel’s face. He leaned in, the scent of expensive tobacco and desperation clinging to him like a shroud.
"Do we have a deal?" he asked, extending a hand that was steady only through sheer, practiced arrogance.
I looked down at the heavy steel links binding my wrists behind my back, then up at his smug expression. "Expecting someone who is handcuffed to shake your hand? You’re even more delusional than the people you lock up."
"Right... but I won't risk taking those off, ya know? You’re a wild card, Y/N." He slumped into his chair, the leather groaning under his weight. "Just say yes or no. Life or death. It’s that simple."
"No," I spat, the word echoing off the cold, concrete walls.
"So you don't want revenge for your parents?" He leaned forward, his voice a poisonous crawl. "Billy Hill has a family. We could make them feel every bit of the agony you’ve endured. Revenge is the only way to balance the scales."
"What’s the point?" I cut him off, my voice steady despite the hammer of my heart. "My parents are still dead. His family has no idea what he did. Hurting them doesn’t bring back the people I love. It just creates more monsters like you."
"Ugh!" Daniel shoved his chair back, the metal legs screeching against the floor like a dying animal. "I should have known. You’re just as weak as your father. Tell me where Jeff is if you want to walk out of here alive!"
"Funny," I chuckled, the sound hollow and dry. "I think politics suits you perfectly. You talk about justice, but you only smell like ambition."
He snapped. In a blur of motion, he rushed me, slamming his palms onto the arms of my chair. His face was inches from mine, his pupils blown wide with a frantic, career-ending greed. "I want what I need, Y/N. Tell me, or I’ll ensure this is the last room you ever see."
"So you're going to kill me?"
"If I have to. That’ll be your end." He drew his service pistol, the cold barrel clicking as he pressed it against my temple. The steel felt like ice.
I stared into his eyes, a slow, bitter smile spreading across my lips. "I only have one thing to say, Chief. Death doesn't want to take me yet. I’ve tried to invite him in, but he seems to think I have work left to do."
"Then I'll be your Death!" he roared. "Tell me how to find him! Or I---"
Then a sudden echoes of bullets stop us both. The building shuddered. The muffled, frantic pops of high-caliber gunshots erupted from the hallway, followed by the heavy, rhythmic thud of combat boots and the piercing screams of men who realized too late they weren't the apex predators in the building.
I leaned forward, my lips brushing against Daniel’s ear as his hand began to tremble. "You don't have to make an effort finding him anymore, Chief... because he's already here. And he’s looking for you." Then he slap me to shut me up. It stings but it only made me smile to know that he is losing control.
The door burst open. A young officer stood there, his uniform torn, his face a mask of pure, unadulterated terror. "Sir! The killer—he’s inside! Half the floor is gone! Every—"
"Make it clear, Officer!" Daniel yelled, his voice cracking.
"Jeff the killer is here! He’s moving through the squad like a ghost! We can't hit him!"
Daniel turned back to me, his face pale and slick with sweat. "He is killing my men, Y/N... innocent men."
"I know," I replied, my voice devoid of pity. "I can hear them screaming. And soon you will be.. you corrupt, greedy and power-leeching chief.." I smiled like I was influenced by Jeff himself to smile at others predicament. I can see his jaw clench at what I said, as if he is ready to smack me again but halted himself.
"You have to fucking help us! He’s a monster! Don't you fucking see?! Don't let your filthy love blind you to what he is!"
Jeff is indeed a killer but who made him that? Its the people who broken him.. broken us. In fact, he is not even innocent.. he is using that word to categorize himself as someone who do good deeds just to hide his true intention---to gain power, to gain peoples voice and use it against to poor and weak people like me.. like my parents. You two-faced officer. I didn't argue. I didn't waste words. I lashed out with my leg, catching him squarely in the shin with a sickening crack. He let out a strangled groan, stumbling back.
"He might be a killer," I hissed, my eyes burning with a sudden, fierce clarity. "But you’re worse. You don't give a damn about justice. You only care about your FUCKING STUPID REPUTATION—"
SMACK!
The force of his hand across my face sent my head reeling again, but this time, the copper taste of blood filling my mouth instantly. He grabbed my hair, wrenching my head back so I had to look at his twisted, ugly face.
"Bitch! I'm done with you!" He hauled me up by my arms, dragging me toward the door. "If you won't talk, you’re the bait. Officer! Kill that freak on sight! Use her as a shield if you have to!"
"B-But sir—"
"THAT’S A FUCKING ORDER! GO!"
"Y-Yes sir!" Then he runs away as we head upstairs while Chief Daniel drags me with him. He reach out for his radio and then called someone to meet him upstairs maybe one of his men.
"Why are we heading to the rooftop?" I asked but he did not respond. No sarcastic remarks. Until we reached the place and put me close to the end of it.
"To be honest, I can push you to your death but I still need you. I'm sure your boyfriend will do what I say if it costs your life"
The air on the rooftop was bitingly cold, the gray, heavy sky pressing down on us like a lid. Daniel shoved me toward the edge of the building, the wind whipping my hair across my eyes. Ten SWAT officers surrounded us, their rifles leveled at the stairwell door.
"I pity you," I rasped, looking at the man who used to call my father his best friend. "Dad never knew the snake he was inviting to dinner."
Daniel laughed, a sharp, manic sound that made the hair on my neck stand up. He kicked my back, forcing me to my knees, and grabbed a handful of my hair to jerk my head up.
"Here’s the plot twist you’ve been waiting for, Y/N," he whispered into my ear, his breath hot and foul. "I'm the one who ordered Billy Hill to kill your parents. Your father was getting too close to my 'side businesses.' I had to clean house."
The world went silent. The wind stopped. The ringing in my ears became a roar. "I'll kill you... I'll fucking kill you!" I screamed, thrashing against my cuffs.
"Easy there. I thought you didn't want revenge?"
"I THOUGHT THE KILLER WAS DEAD! I NEVER THOUGHT MY FATHER'S BEST FRIEND—"
"ENOUGH!" He backhanded me again, sending me sprawling onto the gravel-covered roof. He stepped on my hip, his heavy boot grinding into the bone as he casually lit a fresh cigar. "That was his mistake. He thought we were friends. I only saw a loose end."
He flicked the hot ash onto my shoulder, the embers stinging my skin. I lay there, the cold gravel pressing into my cheek, watching the gloomy sky. Why is the world so unfair? Why were you so kind, Dad? Why weren't you careful? We weren't just strangers in this city; we were lambs who thought the wolves were dogs.
"Why are you crying?" he asked, his voice dripping with bored cruelty.
The pain was everywhere now—the cancer in my brain, the grief in my chest, the cold in my bones. I sobbed into the dirt, the puddle of my own tears mixing with the dust. I couldn't take it. I want to scream and strangle this man, but for what? If I did that.. will it revive my parents? Will I be able to satisfy the aching in my heart?
"Y/N!"
Then the familiar voice didn't come from the rooftop. It came from the shadows behind the cooling units. It was a rasp, a growl, a promise of absolute carnage.
"Jeff..." I whispered, my heart leaping even as my world fell apart.
