The love you deserve

I wore his t-shirt on our first date
and I am sorry I tainted us
with the memories of him.
His lips, ever so different from yours
(harsh, rough, pushing),
tasted like sharp mint.
You, however, taste distinctly sweet.
Everything about you
is soft and careful, entirely opposite
of him. I try the best I can
to love you the way you deserve.
I try to love you the way he never
loved me, in the gentle ways.
I stay, even if you do not ask.
I whisper my devotion onto
your neck as you sleep by
my side, quiet but there
(much like how you love me).
I am watching your eyes,
changing with the light,
the shadows hanging around them persistent.
Our pieces are beginning
to fit together
and we laugh because
we are every cliché we've ever made fun of.

I am loving into your bones
and I am trying to fill in
the empty parts of your body.
