I knew from the minute I walked into the loft that tonight was going to be a long one. From clear down the hall you could hear music blasting and a whole lot of chatter. Anxiety rose in my stomach, and I think Vic could tell because he quickly intertwined our fingers and gave me a small reassuring smile.
"This'll be fun, just stick with me. It'll be okay, okay?"
"Okay." Was all I said before holding his hand a little tighter and following Vic to the door. Sure enough, a boy I recognized from one of my classes stood before the door.
"Vic and Kellin right?" He questioned. Vic replied with a yes, and not a second later the door was opened and I was faced with small flashing lights, crowds, and loud music. Vic pulled me through the door and through small crowds of people before we were at a bar.
"Is this illegal?" I asked a little louder than intended. If I was any quieter I bet no one could hear me.
"Only if people under twenty-one drink, so don't drink."
"Oh but you can?"
"Yeah I can." Vic responded with a smirk.
"If you touch a cup, I won't hesitate to do the same." I threatened, though I don't know for what reason.
"I don't really like drinking anyway, you know, since-"
"Say no more." I dismissed, aware of Vic's drift. Alcohol had destroyed his first relationship with another guy; I couldn't blame him for not wanting to drink very much. "So... What should we do?" I asked meekly, feeling the anxiousness rise in my stomach again.
"Hmm, I don't know. Whoever's running this has an air hockey table." Vic suggested, pointing to the vacant table across the room.
"I suck at air hocky, but let's give it a go."
"Give it a go?" Vic mocked. I rolled my eyes.
"Stop bullying me."
"You're cute when you're sad." Was all he said before pecking my lips and I followed him to the table. "Best out of five." Vic challenged, sliding me a mallet which I grabbed hastily. I watched intently as Vic tossed a puck onto the table and hit it mildly. I knew he could do much better, but I also knew he was taking it easy on me.
Easy was the last thing I wanted, so nonetheless, I hit the puck back harder, catching Vic off guard as the puck hit the edge and bounced back to me. I hit it again, sending it straight into Vic's goal.
"That was mean." Vic insulted, but smiled at me before flinging the puck over to me. I got to begin the second round since I won. It surprised me how long only five rounds could go, but I guess if you're both equally good it can draw out for a long time. In the end, I beat Vic on the last round when we were tied. Vic didn't congratulate me or anything, but I knew he wasn't a sore loser either.
"You know what, I think a beer sounds pretty good now. I'll dwell on my loss." Vic joked before I watched him walk across the room to a keg. My eyes lingered on him as he filled his plastic cup with beer and pressed it to his lips, taking a long drink of it. His gaze met mine again, so I didn't wait any longer before walking back over to him, taking the cup from his hands before pressing it to my lips. Vic watched me in amusement as I took a drink.
"That's illegal." He noted, to which I responded by taking another drink before handing him the cup. "Oh no, don't worry, I won't tell." Vic said sarcastically before draping an arm around my shoulder. I laughed at him a little, feeling pretty satisfied with the situation. I still felt a bit awkward being so open about our relationship, but I was also more adjusted to us being public. I knew that'd be one thing I'd miss when I went home; Acceptance. Back there, I can't even talk about my crushes or who I love because everyone would hate me if I said anything. Instead I keep my mouth shut.
Most of the party was a big blur after that. Vic and I went separate ways as I decided I wanted to explore by myself and get out of this little bubble I had put up around me. It turned out that Tony was at the party, so I stopped and talked to him for awhile before moving on and bumping into Mike and Brendon. Most of everyone here I could recognize from classes, and others I didn't because they were seniors like Vic. Part of me wondered the entire time who Vic was actually friends with.
This entire relationship I had never really been around him when he was hanging out with his friends, but I knew that he had friends too. Who wouldn't in such a big academy? I brushed the thought off a few moments later, deciding his friends were none of my business.
The loft was extremely humid, and as the temperature rose, the music seemed to get louder and the crowds seemed to get bigger. I began to feel small and very claustrophobic, so without thinking it through, I went back to the bar and filled a cup with beer before hurrying out of the loft and outside. It was completely dark out except for the street lights that illuminated parts of the street and sidewalks. With a sigh, I took another drink from my cup and rested against the light pole. Not too long after I heard footsteps coming my way. I turned my attention to Vic.
"Oh, hey." I said softly. "Sorry I disappeared, it was really hot in there." I explained.
"It's okay, I saw you go out." Was all Vic said before turning his attention to my cup. Instantly I regretted the idea of getting another drink, but Vic didn't say anything. He didn't seem to mind this time, but maybe that was only because I was drinking responsibly and I wasn't peer pressured.
"It's really pretty out." I noted, looking up at the sky which was pretty cloudy. The moon was being blocked out, but you could still see it's outline. When I finished my drink, I set my cup down in the grass and sighed, spinning myself around the pole a few times. Vic smiled at me, taking a step closer. I swung around again, but instead of continuing on like before, I found myself running straight into Vic, his lips touching mine immediately. He intended for that to happen; I knew that much. Nonetheless, I let him do what he wanted, letting go of the pole and wrapping my arms around his neck. Vic kissed me eagerly before resting his forehead on mine.
"We should get going." Vic breathed. I nodded in agreement, letting him kiss me one more time before following Vic back to his car, leaving my cup by the pole.
