Two Dr.Parks

Hwasang's point of view

Today is one of the weekends where I shadow at my mom's hospital for school. Ten and Aunt Santana holds in their laughs as they look at my mom's and I our matching scrubs she insisted we wear.

Aunt Santana: Burt and Ernie? How cute.
Mom: I know right!

Oh brother.

Ten: How's things been so far Hwa?
Me: Some dude decided to be kinky with his partner and an anal bead got stuck in his hole.

I'm still cringing thinking about it.

Aunt Santana: Oh so y'all got ass hands?
Mom: Shut up, what about your floor?
Aunt Santana: So far so good. Had to admit a few and that never goes well.

She rolls up her sleeve and shows deep red scratches.

Ten: Holy shit. Are you okay?
Aunt Santana: It happens. I better get going, I have a patient at two. See ya' Park twins!

Ten glances at his watch.

Ten: Same, gotta' go kick some interns in their asses. Goodluck!
Mom: Alright. Part of being chief of this hospital means I have to do rounds. Rounds meaning making sure everyone is putting your father's paychecks to use.
Me: Have you ever fired anyone?
Mom: I don't like firing people so usually your dad comes in and do it.

I chuckle.

Me: You're such a pushover mom.
Mom: Tuh, if you only knew me in college. Let's go!

My mom taps a few times before entering the room. A young girl lays there flipping through a book, she sees us and smile. I try to smile back but I can't lie, it's sad. Every time I see someone suffering from cancer or any terminal disease I start to feel awful for them.

Mom: Hey Penny, how you feeling sweety?
Penny: The nurses said my vitals were fine but I have a bad cough that needs monitoring. Is he related to you? He looks like Mr.Park.

My mom grins.

Mom: This is my son Hwasang, he's studying to be a doctor too.
Penny: So there will be two Dr.Parks?
Mom: Sure will, two to come bother you all the time.

Penny giggles.

Penny: You don't bother me. I like when you come visit me.
Me: What're you reading?
Penny: Frog and Toad.
Me: That was my favorite book as a kid. Want me to read it to you?
Penny: Aren't you busy?
Mom: Nope, he's all yours.

For the next hour I spend time with Penny. She tells me about her parents, her hobbies and school before she got sick. She's always wanted to run a horse stable due to horses being her favorite animal.

Penny: What's your favorite animal?
Me: If I had to pick, elephants. They're gentle giants.
Penny: It's too bad people kill them for ivory.
Me: Jesus, why do you know that?
Penny: I read a lot.

I smile, she is a smart kid. My mom enters with a stuffed horse.

Mom: Look what I found.
Penny: It's so pretty!
Mom: It's all yours.
Penny: Thank you so much!

As we walk down the hallway my mom glances at me.

Mom: Ya' know, if you're going to work in a hospital you can't have that look of pity on your face. Show sympathy and empathy but also let them know you're here for them. This is a job but I also love helping people. That's why I became a doctor.

She ruffles my hair and I smile.

Me: You're right.

I stop dead in my tracks when a naked old man runs pass us. Aunt Santana comes running after holding a hospital gown.

Aunt Santana: Jimmy come put your damn clothes back on!

Now I have to get the vision of old man penis and balls out my head.

The next day I went over to my parents' for lunch. My stepdad said he was putting steaks on the grill so I can't miss that.

Mom: Oh honey, Penny told me to give you this.

I look at the makeshift necklace and there's an elephant charm hanging from it.

Mom: During craft time she fought tooth and nail for that charm in the box. I didn't know why until I realized that's your favorite animal.

I put the necklace around my neck and smile. I have a lot of expensive chains but for some reason this one feels the warmest to me.
