the next weekend - november twenty fourth, two thousand nineteen"hey there, sweetie. kick off is in thirty minutes, you about ready..?" dad asked as he opened my office door. i tried diverting my focus from wherever this conversation was about to go. i let out a breath, "almost, why?"
he leaned against the doorway, awkwardly shoving his hands into his pockets before a silence lingered. he cleared his throat, "there's a whole lot of press on the field, and issac's waiting for ya.."
bothered by this interaction, i rolled my eyes. "ace, baby you are the one that everyone is here to see.." he said trying to reassure me. i let out a deep sigh and shook my head, "dad.. i can almost guarantee that this stadium isn't packed full cause of me"
"but, honey" he said before i stopped him. "i got it dad, you somehow need me for the publicity. you don't need to say anything else" i said grabbing my shoes, before pushing past him. i angrily walked along the cat walk, shoes in hand as people poured into the stadium.
"av, avery!" i heard my name called out in the distance. i turned, letting out a small smile before lucas stopped his golf cart along side me. "good lord, i can't leave you alone for two seconds can i? where are ya shoes honey?" he asked playfully.
i sighed, agitated. "i don't wanna talk about it" i deadpan, crossing my arms. he let out a loud exaggerated sigh, before patting the empty seat on the golf cart. "c'mon girl, where am i takin' ya?" he asked.
i happily hopped onto the golf cart, getting comfortable. "you're god sent.." i said as he let out a belly laugh. "i- i don't know about all that honey. i was just on my way to pick up a high profile guest but i saw a pretty little thing and had to stop.."
my face flushed, before hiding in my hands. "luke.." i said. he let out a low chuckle. "avery.." he contradicted.
"wait, let me get this straight. you're tellin' me you picked me up.. instead of a high profile, high paying guest?" i asked. he nodded, "yeah, but don't tell my boss though, otherwise she'll bite my head off" he said before shooting me a wink.
i shook my head, before letting out a chuckle. "c'mon honey.." he said, his accent as thick as mine. his grip tightened on the steering wheel, as he tried piecing together what he wanted to say. "you're you, avery.."
'i'd do just about anything for you, you make me want to be a better man. a- and you had no shoes on.. what kinda person would i be if i let you walk around with no shoes on?" he asked as he grabbed my thigh, playfully squeezing.
he cleared his throat, "you goin' to see issac..?" he asked as i said nothing, only involuntarily nodding. i pressed my tongue to my cheek, "so, you have any idea who this high profile guest is?" i asked, desperate to change the subject.
lucas shook his head, "no, but i'll find out as soon as you get your pretty little self off of my golf cart" he said. i rolled my eyes, "my.. golf cart" i said as i pointed to the cowboys logo custom printed on the cart.
lucas let out a low raspy mhm, before wrapping his arms around me. "can i please have some sugar before you go and love on another man?" he asked. i sighed, trying my best to avoid eye contact, "lucas.." I said hesitant.
"c'mon, just a peck baby" he said, before kissing me. he tried his best to hide his head over heels smile, 'i'll see you later, okay darlin'..?" he said, as i nodded before walking onto the field before making eye contact with issac.
