marshall pov
"dude, this album is fucking killing it. it honestly deserves all the attention it's getting" denaun said happily as I continued to drive. i let out a low chuckle before another call popped up on my stereo screen.
"yo denaun, give me sec. I think it's dre on the other line" I said putting him on hold and answering the incoming call before a blood curdling scream echoed through the car. I quickly furrowed my eyebrows, "whoa, what the fuck?" I said, pulling over.
I quickly noticed samantha's name on the caller id.. but all I could hear was crying and a few mumbled words in between. "samantha, hey, take a deep breath for me honey. what's goin' on?"
"avery.." she cried out. I suddenly became nauseous, "what about her? w-what about avery, samantha?" I asked.
"she was in an accident" she said, as I felt a weight in my chest. "I don't know much else, but her parents called and asked me to get there as soon as I could. but I needed to let you know so you weren't expecting her"
"and give you a chance to get here" she said as she gasped for air. I let out a small sigh trying to wrap my head around what was happening. "samantha p-please tell me that you're not driving to the hospital by yourself?"
"i'm here, marsh!" mark yelled out in the background. "okay.. alright, i'll be there in a couple of hours" I said before ending the call, and pulling back onto the road.

I felt nauseated, and sick to my stomach. I needed this plane to go faster, knowing damn well that, that wasn't much of an option. all that consumed my mind was avery, and it pained me to know she was hurt and I wasn't there when she needed me most.
"welcome back to dallas-fort worth mr.mathers" the pilot said as we landed. I let out a small grateful smile, knowing I only had one place to be.
SAMANTHA KOCH (3:10 PM): hey, we're at the baylor scott hospital. she's in room 208. the address is 5602 warren pkway, frisco texas
REPLY (3:11 PM): okay, i'll be there as soon as I can

"208, 2-0-8" I said to myself as I walked down the hallway. "marshall!!" I heard samantha yell out as she ran toward me. her eyes bloodshot from all the tears she's cried. I pulled her into me, as tight as I could, knowing she needed it as badly as I did.
"I shouldn't have started a fight with her, I should have just answered her fucking calls but I was mad. I was mad that she was going to michigan.. this wouldn't have happened i-" she said before I stopped her.
"hey, no, we're not playing the blame game right now hun. do you understand?" I said as I wiped the wetness from her face. "where are avery's parents?" I asked as she pointed to a half open door a little further down the hallway.
the room was dimly lit, machines were slowly beeping and some sort of gospel music was playing. I softly knocked, before both her parents and brother turned to face me, "oh.. thank god" her mother said as she looked to me with swollen eyes.
I let out a small sigh, as it pained me to see her like this. "what happened?" I asked, looking down at the ground and bracing myself for the answer. her father sighed, "some, stupid idiotic fuck" he said before getting choked up.
her brother stepped forward, "officer jones.." he said before clearing his throat. "noah.." he said as he held out his hand for me to shake.
I let out a nod, "marshall" I said as I shook his hand. "we believe the driver was intoxicated. he blew a red light and drove into the drivers side. her car rolled a handful of times, the windows busted and they had to cut her out of the seat belt and pry her door open"
I could see noah was trying to hold in every single emotion and be as professional as possible but this was avery, this was his own flesh and blood.. his baby sister was laying in that bed.
he quickly cleared his throat, "will you p-please excuse me" he said, before following his father. I gave her mother a small sympathetic smile, "she's stable at the moment, but they did give her some pretty heavy pain medications" she said before stepping out herself.
I sat in the empty chair next to avery's bed, before taking her hand in mine. my thumb traced the bloodstains on her hands before my vision became burred as tears started to well. "what happened to makin' it to michigan, baby?"
I looked up, to see blood stains on her beautiful face. "i'm here now, sweet girl" I said as tears started to stream down my face. I let out a gasp, allowing myself to fall apart before getting up and grabbing a towel, and running it under water from the sink.
"lets get you cleaned up, honey" I said as I wiped her face. I stopped, staring at her bruised and bleeding features. "god dammit.." I said as I shook my head, and wiped the wetness from my cheeks.
"deshaun, can you hear me right now? this girl needs to be okay dude.. this girl is everything to me" I said calling out helplessly as I buried my face into the crook of her neck. "I love you, sweet girl.." I said before sitting back in the chair, waiting.

there was a soft knock on avery's hospital room door, causing my eyes to open. "hey, marshall..
I got you some water and something to eat" samantha said as she put everything down on the hospital tray.I sighed, before roughly running my hands over my face. "thank you.." I said, knowing my hunger was suppressed. I looked toward avery, before taking her hand in mine as samantha gave me a small sympathetic smile that mimicked the one I gave her mother.
"marshall.. she's a fighter. you know as well as I do that she's fucking stubborn" she said as she sat down next to me. I nodded, before another round of tears started to blur my vision, "this just wasn't how it was supposed to go"
a silence hung over us before yelling erupted in the hallway. I quickly furrowed my eyebrows, "what the hell?" I said as I ran into the hallway, met by her father and brother, mark and a few staff members around an unknown man.
"i'm sorry, p-please let me apologize" the man yelled, as he was handcuffed by her brother. her father shook his head, "apologize to who? and what good does it do for my family when my only daughter, my baby girl, is laying in a hospital bed because of you?"
honestly father to father, I felt his pain.
