a few weeks later - october, two thousand and twenty

"hey, avery.." hailie said as i let out a grumbled mhm, phone tucked into the crook of my neck as i continued to type. "are you and dad, ever gonna make wedding plans..?" she asked, leaning on the kitchen counter across from me.

i sighed, "i- i don't know, we haven't really talked about it and we're both really swamped with work right now" i said. "but.." hailie said before she was interrupted, by me, as i answered the person on the other end of the call.

"no, no.. that's unacceptable. i need that document signed by mr.montgomery and sent back to my lawyer at pfister family law, immediately" i said, before hanging up. i let out a deep sigh, as i ran my hands over my face.

"i'm sorry, what was the question?" i asked, frazzled as the girls stayed silent staring at me with wide eyes. "hey.. is everything okay, avery?" alaina asked as she made her way into the kitchen, running a hand along my back.

i nodded, "just a lot of legal bullshit.. that i don't want to deal with" i said. "well, does dad know anything about it? maybe his lawyers can help?" hailie said as i shook my head. "there's no need to get him all wrapped up in this.."

"plus, my family has way more lawyers.." i said, scrolling through the numerous messages that ryan had been sending me. "but anyway, what we're y'all asking about a wedding?" i asked as i stared down at my engagement ring.

the both nodded, "you and dad have been engaged for almost seven months, and haven't made a single plan for a wedding" alaina said, as i nodded. "i really love your dad, and at this point i don't need a wedding to prove that"

"we'll probably just go to the courthouse and sign the papers.." I said as the girls whined out in disapproval. "think of all the beautiful pictures, and the vows.. have you not been thinking about this day since you were little?" hailie asked.

i shrugged, "i have planned this wedding in my head, at least five times in my head.." alaina said as i let out a low chuckle. "well, i'm glad someone's thought about" i said as the girls rolled their eyes.

seconds later i heard the front door open and keys hitting the entryway table. "avery, i'm home baby" marshall said as i heard his footsteps down the hallway. "i only have a few minutes to say hello, give you a kiss and grab a snack before my meeting.."

"you and avery have been engaged for almost seven months and haven't made a single wedding plan.." alaina said as marshall's eyes widened. "oh, shit.. it had honestly slipped my mind cause of everything that had been happening. why didn't you say something baby?"

i shook my head, "because it hadn't been on my mind either. planning a wedding was the last thing on my mind, and i wasn't even sure if i wanted to have one. i figured we'd just go and get the paperwork signed.."

"is that's what you want?" marshall asked, tucking some loose hair behind my ear. "cause if so, fuck my meeting. i'll take you to the courthouse right now" he said, pulling me into him so my back was to his chest.

i let out a belly laugh, as marshall peppered my skin with kisses, "don't listen to these two.. there's no immediate rush. but sooner or later you will be mrs.mathers.." he said as he gently held my chin between his thumb and pointer finger.

later that night

"hey, sweet girl" marshall said as he climbed into bed, sitting next to me. i looked up from the book i was reading, giving him a small sleepy smile, "hey.." i said as i leaned into him, melding  comfortably.

"so, what i gather from today's conversation is you don't wanna have a wedding?" he asked, as he softly stroked my hair. i shrugged, "i have never been the type of girl, that wanted a big white wedding.."

"i can lie and say i haven't thought about it at all.. but that's not true. i'm just scared of planning it and then it falling apart right before my eyes" i said. "avery james, i am not ryan. i would never hurt you or put you in harms way"

i sighed, before burying my head in my hands. "i understand that psychologically there's been some trauma, but that's okay, we can work through that" he said. "marshall there's something i need to tell you.."

he paused, waiting for me to speak. "i have been fighting ryan legally, for months to sign divorce paperwork" i said as tears brimmed my eyes. "wait a minute, avery you told me you left him at the alter.."

"and that's still true, but a few days before the wedding he forced me to elope and sign a prenup that his family drafted" i said before falling apart. "he's been messaging me nonstop, about the paperwork and saying vile shit"

marshall pulled me into him as tight as he could as i cried into his tshirt. "shh, shh it's okay baby. i'll take care of it, alright? i'll figure it out and do whatever i have to, to make him sign. he's done hurting you sweet girl"

"i want to marry you.." I said in between sniffles as i traced his tattoos up and down. "and you will, i can promise you that. no matter how big or small you want the wedding to be, you will forever be mine"
