marshall pov

I paced the halls of the intensive care unit, anxiously waiting. but knowing there was no clear answer in the foreseeable future made me more than unsettled. it made me want to scream at the top of my lungs.

I leaned on the doorway of avery's room, facing her, watching her as all the machines slowly beeped, before my phone started to vibrate. I let out a deep sigh and shut my eyes as tight as I could.

all I wanted was to be left alone, but I knew better than that. I knew that avery would never want me to act like this. but I was falling apart at the seems. before I could open the text thread, tears blurred my vision again/

ALAINA MARIE (2:30 AM): hey dad, how's avery?

HAILIE JADE (2:33 AM): any updates?

REPLY (2:45 AM): unfortunately, nothing yet

ALAINA MARIE (2:50 AM): let us know if you need anything, dad *teary eyed emoji*

"hey marshall, did you want to go back to her apartment and get some rest?" samantha asked as I quickly denied the offer. "i'm not leaving her, alone" I said before stubbornly shoving my hands in my pockets.

"you're not leaving her alone, i'll be here. but marshall, you have to take care of yourself - you cannot keep pouring from an empty cup" she said as I nodded in agreement, doing my best to hold back another round of tears.

I cleared my throat, "i'm gonna go for a walk, get some air" I said before wandering down the hallway. I sighed, before pulling my phone from my pocket, contemplating on calling nathan before I pulled the trigger pressing the call button.

"hello?" he said, his voice raspy from sleep.
"hey, I-I didn't mean to wake you bro. i'm sorry" I said softly.

nathan let out a small sigh, "I know you wouldn't be calling me this late if everything was okay. what's goin' on man?" he asked before a silence lingered. I let out a low chuckle to cover the pain, "depends who you're asking"

"marsh, what's really goin' on? you seem off. the girls told me you were seeing someone new, is it that? ya'll ain't seeing each other anymore or something?" he asked. I rolled my eyes, knowing my girls couldn't keep anything to themselves.

I cleared my throat, "avery was on her way to catch a flight to michigan, and was involved in a really serious car accident" I said. it took a minute for nathan to register what I had said - but I don't blame him for it, it was well into the early hours of the morning.

I heard fumbling, and muffled talking more than likely between him and ashley. "shit, marshall. if you need me, don't hesitate to ask bro. you know i'll be on the next flight out"

another silence lingered, "I need you to be honest with me. what would you do if, god forbid, something happened to ash?" I asked as he sighed heavily, before clearing his throat. "I-I don't know marsh, I can't even comprehend the thought"

I gasped for more air, as I continued to fall apart. "that's exactly how feel, I feel like i'm spiraling. it was hard to trust someone new and allow my walls to come down but this is just my absolute worst fucking nightmare, bro"

the tv illuminated in the dark hospital room, my eyes were glued to the morning news as pictures of my sweet girl and the accident popped up on the screen. I wined, seeing them. I shut my eyes tight before resting my head in my hands - saying a small prayer.

in the quiet room my phone started to vibrate, but I didn't care. I let out an irritated sigh, before sending the call straight to voicemail but whoever it was continued to call. "hello?" I said as I answered the call.

"how the hell did you not let anyone of us know about avery?" paul asked. I let out another sigh, "us..?" I asked.

denaun let out a low mhm, "we're all here, dude" he said, realizing I was on some multi-line call. I pressed my tongue to my cheek, frustrated, "i'd ask how you found out, but I already know it's on every god damn news channel"

"avery and her family are household names, just like yourself.." paul said, as I turned off the tv and threw the remote. "what happened, marshall?" dre asked, interjecting himself, trying to get a word in over everyone.

"I-" I stumbled over my words.
"who do I have to kill..?" curt asked, seriousness in his tone.

I sighed, "an intoxicated driver ran a red light and rammed into the driver's side of the car. she lost control and her car ended up rolling a few times. she was pinned under something and all tangled up on the seat belt"

I heard the collective ohs and awes. "they had to pry open her door and cut her out of the seat belt. I-I don't know if I told you but her brother is a cop for the city.. and his buddies happened to be close to the accident"

"that poor girl must have been scared outta her mind" paul said. "I just can't wrap my head around it, I mean, i'm not gonna be able to sleep until I know she's okay" I said before confused silence lingered between all of us.

"marshall, you have to take a breather. none of this is in your control" dre said. I sighed, "she was on her way to michigan bro.." I blurted out. "but, anything can happen marshall" paul argued back.

"okay, alright.. enough. how's avery doing now?" dre asked cautiously. "she's cut up pretty bad from all the glass and she has a shit ton of bruising. but she's also on some heavy ass pain medications but at this point we're just.. waiting"

a few hours later

before I realized, my body has given into sleep. but I was woken up by avery's nurse tapping me on the shoulder, "mr.mathers.." she said as I jumped up startled. I cleared my throat as I sat up and gathered my surroundings.

"is she awake?" I asked, seeing the daylight shine through the curtains. the nurse shook her head, "no sir, but y'all do have quite a few visitors waiting on ya in the lobby" she said as she went about, checking avery's vitals.

I let out a sigh, shoving my hands in my pockets and walking out of her room to see denaun and nathan in the waiting area. "hey.. what are you guys doing here?" I asked curiously, as nathan let out a small scoff.

he crossed his arms, "dude, you actually think we'd let you go through this alone?" he asked. I cocked an eyebrow, "we..?" I asked, confused.

denaun nodded, "we all hopped a flight early this morning" he said as curt and dre turned the corner with paul not to far behind, all of them carrying handfuls of flowers. I shook my head, completely overwhelmed.. but grateful.

"this means alot.." I said doing my best to hold it together. "marshall this is a serious situation, and both you and avery deserve to have all hands on deck. so whatever you guys need, we're here" dre said as he reassured me.

"I also just wanna put this out there, that if needed, anyone here is ready to throw hands for that girl - no hesitation" curt said, as I let out a low chuckle. I took a deep breath, taking in the men in front of me..

"thank you" I said as my voice cracked. I refused to make eye contact with anyone, so my focus diverted to the ground. "it's agonizing to watch, like my heart physically hurts when I look at her. and time just feels so slow here.." I said before samantha screamed my name.
