a silence lingered as we sat in the car waiting for the appointment time, "what time is my mom, and aunt supposed to meet us at?" i asked. samantha barely looked away from her phone, "i told them to be here a few minutes before"

within seconds, i caught a glimpse of my mothers speedy red range rover as she pulled into the parking lot. "they're here.." i said as we piled out of the car. i stopped in my tracks, realizing my mother and aunt were not alone.

i gripped samantha's arm, "why is my grandmother here?" i asked, as my stomach turned. "i- i'm not sure. they didn't tell me she was coming" she said as i anxiously chewed at my lip, doing my best to keep it together.

"okay, but why the fuck would she want to be here, she hates marshall" i said, my attitude now in full swing. "avery you have to understand how important this is to your family, i mean, you're getting married again" she said as i rolled my eyes.

i let out a grumble grunt, "to someone they don't approve of" i said, relentless. "hey, you know maybe she's here to make peace with it all. cause deep down, i'm sure they know that marshall makes you happy"

"and please, aj, give your family some credit, they've come around and have accepted marshall once they knew this wasn't just a fling" she said as i pressed my tongue to my cheek. "hey there, baby" my mother yelled out, arms extended to pull me into her.

"hey, mama" i said as i melded into her arms, her sweet southern accent comforting me within seconds. "are you excited for today?" she asked all to happy, as she tucked some loose curls behind my ear.

i shrugged, "i mean, yeah, i was until i saw oma get out of the car. why is she even here?" i asked as my mother sighed. "she insisted on being here, once she found out. and you know your daddy can't say no to her"

i couldn't roll my eyes harder, "her, and gpa are the only people in the family who disapprove of marshall, so i restate my question. why would she want to be here?" i asked. "hey, okay.. that's enough. how about we get you inside?" samantha said.

"avery, take a deep breath for me please" she said as she pushed me toward the front door of the bridal boutique. "do you trust me? i promise, i will not let her ruin this for you, okay?" she said as she cupped my face.

"is everything okay?" alaina asked, as hailie and stevie followed behind her. samantha let out a small sigh, "avery's just a little frazzled that her grandmother showed up, so can we be on alert for any negative comments that may upset her?"

the girls nodded, but i was already dreading the day. "hello, we have an appointment for jones at eleven" samantha said. "okay perfect, and who's the bride?" the consultant asked, but i was more focused on my phone.

MARSHY MATHERS (10:47 AM): do not let everyone overwhelm you today. please enjoy yourself honey. i love you *kiss face emoji*

seeing that message from marshall eased every anxiety i was feeling. it had solidified everything about him. "hello there, ms.avery. i'm bailey, your bridal consultant. is there anything particular that you were looking for? or are we going in open minded?"

i cleared my throat, "i have not found anything i really like, so i am open to any suggestions you may have" i said. bailey let out a smile, "perfect, we are gonna have so much fun!" she said all to happy as we headed toward the dressing rooms.
