Chapter 12

Chaos broke out.

Jeremy tried to talk over the yelling and protest but he couldn’t. He looked over at Alyssa for help but she looked zoned out.

He didn’t notice Ella making her way through the crowd until she appeared next to him.

“GUYS!” She yelled. “You have to understand us,” she said. She ran her fingers through her hair as the crowd became silent. “I know I-we, me and D-Dominic haven’t been with you guys for a long time. But he’s really important to us and we can’t move him because we don’t know what state he’s in. He could easily die from being picking up-”

Ella swallowed hard.

“But we can’t let you guys down. We have to find Shane and stop Storm.”

“So you guys and the zombies will leave tomorrow,” Jeremy chimed in. “And I’m leaving Logan and Wes in charge-”

“Can’t do that,” Logan interrupted, getting Jeremy to raise his eyebrow.

“Why not?”

“Because we’re staying with you too,” Wes said, stepping closer to the lunch table.

“We’re staying too,” Lizzie added, appearing front of them. She was holding Ricky’s hand and Jake and Alyssa was next to them.

Jeremy shrugged. “Ok, stay, but the rest of you guys are leaving and that’s final. Charlie and Johnny are in charge.”

With that Jeremy jumped off the table and headed to Dominic’s tent.

He hated seeing the kid he still considers a best friend like that. He looked just like Jeremy felt.

Hopeless.

Ella said her mother told her people in comas could hear you if you talk to them.

Should I... Jeremy thought.

Jeremy walked over to the chair that was placed next to his friend.

“I bet if you were awake you’d think this was stupid,” Jeremy said aloud, smiling little.

He knew Dominic, and he would definitely think this was stupid.

“I don’t know what to do, Dominic.” Jeremy’s voice was quiet, as if he was afraid someone might listen to this conversation.

“I know separating us isn’t a good idea, hell, I don’t even want to think about what will happen when Storm finds out. But- but traveling with an army is hard. It’ll takes weeks before we reach California. If they go ahead, when you get better, we’ll catch up easily.”

When you get better.

Jeremy’s eyes tell to the dogtag necklace around Dominic and he smiled.
