Chapter 39: Before the End
There was no time to dwell on the fact that the radio was broken. Ella only had seconds to allow herself feel, her heart dropped to the bottom of her stomach and she could feel her throat tighten. The air changed. It wasn't fear for themselves, but the fear that Jeremy wouldn't be able to warn the army on time.
All their friends could die.
Daniel's voice brought her back up and away from the pieces of metal on the floor. The lag on Daniel's leg slowed him down, but it didn't stop him. His face changed again. His eyes were bright yellow now and his fangs were out, hiding behind the blood that was accumulating in his mouth.
"I'm going to kill you," Daniel yelled, running down the hall towards them and flashed his bloody fangs at them. With her knife firmly in her palm, she charged toward him as Daniel let out another growl. She swung first, catching Daniel off guard. Ella almost smiled, but the small cut across his cheek only distorted him for a few seconds before his hands were around her waist. He yelled as he pushed her against the wall, hard. Ella fought against the pain shooting up her back and aim the knife for Shane's neck, trying to contain the scream that was stuck in her throat.
Daniel laughed, a deep raspy laugh that almost had Ella's hand shaking. But she kept eye contact with him as she pressed the knife against his skin. The cold, bloody knife had no effect on him.
He pushed his body against hers and moved his hands to her neck, slowly, never breaking the glare they shared. He tighten his grip and smiled at her.
"You're not going to stab me, Ella," Daniel taunted, as he continued to apply pressure slowly. Ella, gasping for air, tried to keep her placement of the knife. But she could feel her grip becoming weaker. "I, on the other hand, am going to have so much fun watching the life leave your eyes." His eyes left hers and trailed down her body. One hand left her neck and he placed it on her heart.
Ella started fighting, dropping the knife on the ground and pushing with all she had against Daniel's weight. She hit his shoulders over and over again with no effect. She started seeing spots as she felt Daniel's claws against her skin. Then she felt Daniel loose his grip.
"Come on, you're not blacking out on me now," he teased. "It's finally getting good," Daniel laughed before a hard crash brought him to the ground. Ella fell to her knees and started coughing as her vision slowly came back.
Dominic called out her name and she blinked a couple of times before she could see him. He had a mop in his hands.
"Ella!" He threw the small remote in the air and caught it between her hands. As the room spun, Ella reached for the wall, placing her weight on it so she could stand up but was knocked back to the ground when Daniel tackled her. Her head slammed against the lab floors and she started blacking out as Daniel took the remote from her hands and threw it across the room.
His hands pinned her down to the ground as he let out a growl in front of her face. Bearing his fangs, he started leaning in, focusing all his attention on Ella's bruised neck.
Before she passed out, Ella watched as Dominic placed the pole around Daniel's neck and pull his head away from his target.
But Daniel had another plan. He let go of Ella's neck and reached for Dominic, his claws missing his stomach by only millimeters. As Ella started to breathe again, she noticed the panic look on Dominic's face, and so did Daniel. He clawed at him again, and again and again, and each time Dominic ducked or moved to the side.
