[A teenage boy sits across from a news reporter in a brightly lit room, surrounded by cameras.]
[Yudai: Age 13]
Interviewer: "...Yeah, yeah, keep that angle."
[The interviewer rushes around that room directing the cameramen and other assistants. Yudai sits awkwardly in his chair as he waits for everything to start.]
Interviewer: "Alright, uh... Tamanaha, you ready?"
Yudai: "Huh? Uh, yeah, I guess. Are we starting?"
Interviewer: "In a bit, just gotta fill you in on a few things first."
Yudai: "Oh, right."
Interviewer: "So, if you read through your contract, you'd already know the basic stuff... don't curse too much, don't go off topic, try to speak clearly and slowly... et cetera, you get it."
Yudai: "Er, uh, yeah."
Interviewer: "Don't stress too much, we won't use any bad takes. If it goes well the first time, we'll only keep you here for 10 minutes or so."
Yudai: "O-Okay..."
[The interviewer sighs and picks up a clipboard with a few papers on it.]
Interviewer: "Let's see... of course, we'll start with an introduction, just say a few words about yourself, nothing too major. I'll introduce your achievement, which'll remain our main topic..."
Yudai: "..."
[The interviewer glares at Yudai.]
Interviewer: "I said you got no reason to be so nervous. We can't have you red-faced and sweating bullets the whole time."
Yudai: "Er, s-sorry, it's just..."
Interviewer: "Yeah, I get it, first time being on TV. Everyone gets nervous from that, but-"
Yudai: "No, not that... It's not my first time on TV, it's happened a few times."
Interviewer: "Oh, really? News to me. So you oughta be a natural by now, good. So what're you so nervous about?"
Yudai: "I... don't think I deserve to be interviewed for all this."
Interviewer: "..."
Yudai: "..."
Interviewer: "...Kid, you risked your life to save a 12-year old from falling to his death. Give yourself some credit."
Yudai: "I-I know, but... anyone else would've done the same, right? I just acted on my instincts, it was never anything special."
Interviewer: "..."
Yudai: "So... I dunno. Do I really deserve to be all over the news? I just think more important things should be broadcast than-"
[Suddenly, the interviewer leans over and gets right in Yudai's face, startling him.]
Yudai: "H-Huh?"
Interviewer: "Listen, kid. You say anyone else would've done the same?"
Yudai: "I mean... yeah."
Interviewer: "..."
[The interviewer smacks Yudai across the head with a roll of paper she was holding.]
Yudai: "O-Ow!"
Interviewer: "That's naïve as hell and you know it. It's a darker world out there than you think. Plenty of people wouldn't dare put themselves in danger over a kid they've never met."
Yudai: "...So you wouldn't do the same?"
Interviewer: "...I can't say I would. We all have our own lives ahead of us, kid. Putting other lives before yours is just plain stupid. Nothing has more value than your own life."
Yudai: "...I..."
Interviewer: "So, no. Most people wouldn't do that. But you did, and that's what's important. That's what makes you special enough to be seen by the nation. So how about you suck it up, and give the people something to smile about for once?"
Yudai: "..."
"...Yeah."
Interviewer: "..."
[She turns to the camera crew.]
Interviewer: "Alright, we're getting started!"
[She takes a seat across from Yudai.]
Camera Man: "Alright, everyone's in place? Rolling in 5... 4... 3..."
"..."
[Just before the cameras start rolling, the interviewer puts on a much friendlier face.]
Interviewer: "Good morning to you all! On today's segment, we have the opportunity to speak with a very special hero in our community."
[She gestures to Yudai, who is trying to muster a smile on his face.]
Interviewer: "This young man sitting across from me is Yudai Tamanaha. It's very nice to meet you!"
Yudai: "...Y-Yeah, it's... Um... Y-Yeah, my name's Yudai Tamanaha. I'm..."
(...Just... say a few words about yourself, huh?)
Yudai: "...I'm... a... second year in junior high."
Interviewer: "..."
Interviewer: "...Ahaha, that's very nice, Yudai. Now, how about you fill our audience in on what exactly makes you such a special little hero? I was very very impressed when I heard about it all!"
Yudai: "...What makes me a hero? Well..."
"..."
"...I... guess I've helped a few people out before."
