Once upon a time, there was a girl whose life was pretty awesome

That girl was me.

Name: Liz Schechter. Age: 22. Status: At Peace.

I guess things like this need an epilogue. Most people ask questions at the end of the story about what happened to everyone. So, I suppose it’s my duty to wrap it up.

All Time Low went on to be pretty big. I mean, not like U2 big, but they had a huge following and toured, like, all the time. It was crazy to see how much people responded to them and how many girls clamored to Alex’s side just to get two seconds to bask in his glory.

I went to college for a year, but then I got tired of that life, so I started singing again and wouldn’t you know? I had a real knack for it! I ended up starting a band myself with a few girls from my Art History class. We weren’t anywhere near All Time Low’s level, but we did our fair share of gigs and recorded almost any chance we got.

Claude ended up moving to California and struck it big in the modeling world. Now she jets from one country to the next and shows up in magazines, but anytime she gets downtime, she rushes home to Maryland to hang out with us and it’s just like old times. She and Jack broke up after high school, but remained good friends. He’s dating some new girl now who is pretty cool and always bring cookies to their rehearsal.

Adrianna opened her own boutique. I worked there when I wasn’t working with my band. It was actually a very nice store and got a lot of business. She got married shortly after high school to some geeky guy with money who blushes when she walks into the room and calls her beautiful every time he sees her. He’s pretty great.

As for Alex and I, we had our ups and downs. With him being gone a lot, things got hard, but at the end of it all, when he stepped off of that plane, I always ran right into his arms and didn’t leave them for at least two days. Everyone keeps asking when the wedding is, but we’re not planning on that anytime soon.

I still wasn’t your average girl. Sure, now I wore dresses and heels from time to time. I learned the mysterious ways of lipstick and actually combed my hair as much as possible, but I took more to ripped tights and skinny jeans on most occasions. I still could kick any of the guys I knew in the ass when it came to sports. I wasn’t afraid of bugs, and most of my friends were still ruefully male, but now, things were different.

When I looked in the mirror, I didn’t hate what I saw. Even on the days I just lounged around in sweatpants, I still felt like I looked good. During my senior year, I learned a hard lesson. Popularity sucks, people can be awful, and no matter what you do, you can’t change how someone feels about you. I got lucky. Alex already lit up when I walked into a room and dreamt about the day I was him, but most girls in the real world don’t get that.

You shouldn’t change your clothes, your hair, your attitude for anyone but you. I realized that later on. In the end, I was grateful that I had made the change for my benefit. I felt better looking in the mirror, but at the same time, I was still the same bossy, overbearing, tough girl I had always been. I was just all of those things wrapped up in a pretty dress.

My life wasn’t perfect. That much was true. There were days when it sucked just as bad as that time in high school, but at the end of it all, I had a group of friends who really loved and cared for me. I had a family who stuck by my side no matter what happened and I had the most amazing boyfriend in the world who loved me more than anything else and honestly, no makeover could make it better than it was.

Everything is different now. I’m no longer seventeen. I’m no longer the reluctant beauty queen I became. I was strong. I was passionate, and I was happy.

When it all comes down to it, happily ever after just means that you’ve finally accepted the life you’ve been given and are living it to the fullest.

And that’s just what I intend to do.
