Chapter 5,

Most people on their birthdays usually celebrate with presents from friends and family and a huge party, but how did I celebrate my seventeenth birthday? Trapped in my bedroom, watching Kat, Claude, and Amy Harmon go through my closet throwing out the gist of my clothing. Surprisingly, my room was actually clean for once, so they didn’t have to clean it.

“No. No. Definitely not. This,” Claude held up a black t-shirt with those bathroom guys on it and said, “Gone. God, Liz, do you have anything worth salvaging?!”

Amy held up a hoodie that I had gotten from my uncle. “This could be good for the winter months.”

Claude shrugged, “It should go in one of those space bags. You won’t be wearing this on a daily basis.” She tossed the hoodie to the side. “Well, Liz, what you’re wearing right now will pretty much be all that’s left until we go shopping tomorrow.”

I smiled. “Perfect. I don’t want anyone besides you to see my makeover until school starts anyways.”

At that moment, my mom called us down the stairs. “Girls! The guests have arrived!”

So, I was having a party. When I walked downstairs, I saw that Alex and Adrianna were already there. Adrianna was looking particularly cheerful. The second she saw me she said happily, “Happy Seventeenth Birthday, Liz-Beth!”

I kinda winced at her calling me the nickname that only Alex’s allowed to call me, but I smiled back and said, “Thanks, Addie! Hey, Lexie-kins.”

Alex kinda blushed and gave me a look, but then he said, “Hey, Lizzy-Bug. Happy Birthday.” We both smiled at each other for a moment, and then I saw the rest of the gang walk in.

His mother, Isobel, came up to me to give me a hug. To me, she was always a second mother. I was able to confide in her no matter what happened. She was amazing.

His father, Peter, walked up to me and gave me a hug and a kiss on the forehead. I loved Peter. He was the only father figure I had in my life. My father had passed away shortly after Kat was born. It was a terrible boating accident that not only killed my father, but it killed my aunt, two cousins, and paralyzed my Uncle Jeff. So since then, I’ve always looked at Peter as another father.

After that, I saw Jack, Rian, and Zack, the other members of Alex’s band, walk in. Instantly they started goofing around with me. Rian had been a close buddy of mine for a while. He was a sweet kid and often times got bullied by the bulky jocks in school, so I came to his rescue on more than one occasion. Jack was a real cool guy. I wished I could hang out with him more, but ever since he and Claude started dating, his time has been devoted more-so to his loving girlfriend. Sometimes it’s cute that they’re so attached at the hip. Other times, it’s just annoying. Zack didn’t go to our school, but when I did hang out with him, he was a cool guy. He was a lot quieter than the rest of the gang, but he was incredibly sweet and fun to be around.

After the cake and presents, everyone sort of just hung out, doing karaoke and playing around. Alex walked up to me and said, “So, Miss Seventeen, how’s your birthday been?” He put his arm around me on the couch like he’s done so many times in the past, only this time I got a tingly feeling inside my tummy.

I shrugged. “It’s been cool. Been fun. Y’know, the same as every other birthday I’ve ever had.”

He smiled that smile at me and I felt myself getting weak in the knees. “Well, I’m having fun… Are… you going to be busy tomorrow?”

I nodded. “Yeah, why?”

He looked disappointed. “I was just wondering if maybe you wanted to go catch a movie or something. Just… you and me. Y’know, like the old times.”
