Winter vacation came faster than I expected. Rian had managed to delete the page, but it was already out there. I spent the rest of that year hiding my head and hoping no one would notice me. I tried to talk to Alex a couple of times, but he still wasn’t ready to talk. I knew I needed to give him space, but I just couldn’t. I wanted to make things right with him and I didn’t know how.

It was the first day of winter vacation. Snow had already starting falling all around the city. I woke up that Saturday morning, relieved that I had a couple of weeks off from school, but also sad that soon, I’d have no choice, but to go back. I didn’t bother with makeup that morning. A little time at home with some hot cocoa and cartoons would do me good. Suddenly, there was knock on my door. “Come in!” I shouted.

My mom opened the door in her big winter coat. “I hate to bother you, Lizzy, but I have to go get some last minute gifts for you and Kat. Do you think you could just keep an eye on her and make sure she doesn’t go snooping around trying to find where I’ve hidden the presents again?”

I nodded. “Yeah! I don’t mind hanging out with her.”

My mom smiled. “Thank you, sweetie. Are you feeling any better?” She quizzed.

I shrugged. I hadn’t filled her in on the whole story, but I told her what she needed to know. “I’ll be fine. Once I get settled in to vacation mode, I’ll feel a lot better.”

She nodded back to me. “Well, I hope so. Remember, I’m here for you if you need anything, Elizabeth.”

I smiled at her. “I know. Thanks, Mom. Go get your shopping done! Kat and I will be fine!”

She waved goodbye and walked off down the hallway. I threw my cardigan over my shoulders and walked downstairs where Kat was watching some cheesy Christmas cartoon while talking on the phone to a friend. My mom gave her a kiss on the forehead and walked out of the house. I sat down in the recliner and tried to watch the show when out of the corner of my eye, I caught a glimpse of Alex’s house. He was outside with his dad, setting up decorations in their yard. As if he could feel me staring at him, he turned his head and stared back at my house for a moment. I could almost see the want in his eyes to come and knock on the door and harass Kat and I. If this had been a year ago, he would’ve come over, drank some hot chocolate and bugged the crap out of Kat until she stormed off into her room. I felt a tear coming to my eye, but I blinked it away. I’d spent too much time these past few months crying and honestly, I was over it. I didn’t feel like crying anymore.

I was so wrapped up in my thoughts, I didn’t even realize Kat was talking to me. “Hello?!! Earth to Liz!”

“Huh?!” I exclaimed looking at her.

She gave me a weird look and said, “I asked if you were OK! You’re just sitting there like a zombie robot mannequin statue or something!”

I nodded. “Yeah… Everything’s fine.”

Kat looked out the window and saw Alex outside with his dad. She turned back to me and said, “Still not talking to you, huh?”
