After arriving at Michael’s house, I found that there was only one thing on my mind; Alex. I couldn’t believe that he acted the way he did. I mean, he did break the plans with me that I tried to make. So, I shouldn’t feel so bad, right?

I was moping on the couch when Michael approached me. “Why is such a beautiful girl looking so sad at such an amazing party?” He put his arm around me and pulled me closer to him. I immediately got a whiff of his Axe body spray and nearly gagged. “What’s the matter, Princess?”

I shrugged, sighing sadly. The image of Alex’s angry face refusing to leave my mind. “It’s complicated. More complicated than I feel like explaining right now.”

Michael chuckled dryly and said, “Now, now. Is that anyway to treat your host?” He shook me lightly. “Come on. I want to help you out.” I shook my head hoping that he’d let the subject drop, but if there’s one thing that I know Michael’s famous for, it’s persistence. “Does it have to do with you bff?” I nodded. “What happened?”

“Nothing… We just had a bit of a falling out is all.” I mumbled. “I just want to forget about it for now, ok?”

Michael nodded. “What’s his deal anyway? Like, I thought he was really into Adrianna. Why’s he so possessive over you?”

I shrugged. “I wouldn’t take it personally, Michael. He’s always been very possessive over me and this whole… makeover has him a bit flustered.”

Michael laughed. “Well, my beauty, it has everyone at school flustered! I haven’t heard people talking this much about one subject since Coach Sykes was getting on with Lauren Hammernick! You, my dear, are incredibly popular!”

I blushed. “Well, I don’t know… I can’t say I don’t enjoy the attention, though!” We both laughed together. I noticed Michael was staring at me.

“Listen;” He spoke after a while. “I know that I gave you hell for our entire time knowing each other, but you gotta understand that I’m a stupid dude. If I had known underneath those gym shorts you had a body like that, whew! I would’ve jumped on you when I had the chance!”

I giggled. “Oh, stop! We all make mistakes. At least you know you were wrong and I appreciate you making the effort to apologize.”

He smiled and I got a weird chill up my spine. “Oh, how wrong I was! Gaskarth doesn’t deserve you, you know that right?”

I scoffed. “Who said I cared about if Alex wanted me or not?”

Michael gave me a look. “Come on, Liz. It’s obvious that you’re into him. I mean, you’ve been his pet since childhood! He tosses you around unfairly and frankly; you deserve better than that.”

I sighed. “Well, I can’t destroy the bond he has with Adrianna. He loves her very much. I’ve pretty much come to terms that I’m really just his bestie.”

Michael nodded again. “Come on; let’s have a drink and let loose, shall we?” He climbed to his feet and held out his hand. I took it and we headed over to a keg in the middle of the living room. “This was my brother’s, but he hasn’t used it in ages! Drink up, dollface!”

He poured the both of us a beer and then tapped the cups together in celebration. I took a swig of my drink and grimaced. Not my favorite thing in the entire world, but eh. It would do. Alex and I used to rummage through his parent’s liquor cabinet and get pretty drunk at his house. The last time we had done that was right before he started dating Adrianna. As I walked over to the dance floor with Michael, a memory came over me from that night.

Alex had climbed up the side of my house and into my window while I was sleeping. “Wake up.” I heard him whisper. “Lizzy-bug, wake up!” I jolted awake to see Alex standing there in a big coat smiling down at me. “Come on. Get your coat and follow me.”
