CHAPTER TWENTY-FOUR
Umbridge's Offer

In approximately ten minutes, Aurora had grabbed her uniform and got dressed. It took her another ten to make sure she looked presentable and to stuff her schoolbag with her textbooks and any assignment that was lying on her bed or bedside table.

"...You heard Professor Sprout!" Susan said, throwing her hands up in the air as she barged through the door.

"Where have you been?" Hannah abruptly questioned as she stepped up to Aurora with a serious yet concerned look on her face. "Do you have any idea of how worried we've been? Susan didn't tell us anything useful regarding your whereabouts. You told her you would join us for breakfast!"

"Breakfast isn't over, you know? I'll gladly accompany you to the Great Hall for a bite if you wish. I can really use some food in me, it might keep me going through the day." Aurora's tone was calm, unlike her friends'.

She hugged Susan, thanking her for not worrying too much. She then looked at Megan, only wishing she hadn't. From the daggering glare she was receiving, she knew it was going to be a lot harder to try to convince her that she wasn't doing anything she wasn't allowed to do.

"Where were you?" Megan asked bluntly, taking a seat at the end of her bed. "Don't say you were in the Hospital Wing or with Nott. I've asked him and he too knows you didn't spend the night in the infirmary. You lied to him, why?"

"I lied because I am tired of everyone wanting to know everything that's going on with me," Aurora partially lied, in a way that made it sound so believable. She knew she had fooled Susan and Hannah, but Megan was still having a questioning look in her eyes. "I freaked out, okay? I didn't know what else to say. He caught me off guard, it was my only excuse. Lately, I've been on the verge of exploding and I needed some time alone. I didn't feel like explaining the chaos running inside my head to Madam Pomfrey. Let alone Theo or anyone else. I don't want either of you to think I have. Not you and not anyone else."

"We wouldn't ever think that of you, Rory," Megan said, dropping her tone and frowning. "And even if you were going a little haywire, we'd be here to help you, not to taunt you."

Hagen smiled at her, relieved that she believed her.

"Come on." Susan handed Aurora her schoolbag. "Let's get you something to eat real fast before classes start."

Aurora took her bag and threw the strap of it over her left shoulder. They all walked out together, leaving the girl's dormitory. However, they stopped as soon as the passageway to the common room entrance cleared. They had unexpected visitors waiting outside. Professor Sprout was about to step in, her wand in hand as she was about to tap the barrels. Although she no longer needed to, not when the student she was looking for appeared right in front of her. She wasn't alone either. Professor Umbridge was by her side and so was the school matron, Madam Pomfrey.
