CHAPTER TEN
A Birthday Surprise

On the last day of December, Aurora's roommates had gone out to the kitchen to fetch a pumpkin pie. The girls giggled as they returned to their dorm. Hannah was in front with a cream pie in her hands, trying to hold back a laugh. Megan and Susan followed her, making sure to remind her not to mess up their plan.

"...For Merlin's sake, Hannah, shut up!" Megan hissed, tugging on the sleeves of the blonde's nightgown. "You're being too loud, you're going to wake her up."

Unknown to them, their beloved friend was lying awake in bed with her eyes closed merely to give the impression that she was still asleep.

"On three," Susan whispered. "One... Two... Three!"

From underneath her pillow, Aurora pulled out her wand and directed it at Hannah who was seconds away from smashing the pie in her face. She reacted so quickly that it came as a surprise to her and the girls. "Immobulus!" Hannah's hand slowed down, giving Aurora the chance to grab the pie out of her hand and take it in her own.

"I'd really hate to get all messy this early in the morning," she said, glancing at the girls. "Seriously, it's seven in the morning."

"It's tradition," Susan responded, taking the spell off Hannah and getting her to move normally. "Come on, Rory, you aren't seriously going to break it because it's early."

"Well, it does save us from cleaning up the mess," Megan added, returning to her bed. "The boys don't have to know. What they don't know won't hurt them."

"Thank you," Aurora agreed.

The rest of the morning, they ended up getting ready for the day. By breakfast hour, the girls were in the Great Hall like every other student and staff member enjoying their first meal of the day. Doing so, owls swooped in and dropped letters or gifts to their owners; Aurora received three letters and a small white box with a red ribbon.

One letter was from Mrs. Diggory, which was attached to the box. The second letter was from Sirius and the last letter wasn't so much a letter. The last one was something that Aurora feared more than anything while in public — a howler. She was quick to tuck the scarlet envelope in her jacket before anyone could see she had one. Keeping in mind that howlers explode if kept sealed for too long, she told herself that she'd open it after eating a bite or two and heading off early to her dormitory.
