The Growing Problem

My own story within the Equestria Girls Universe and the original Friendship is Magic series.

In Equestria Girls, it was established that rifts exist in their world that jumps them to Equestria. How these rifts came to be is what I wanted to explain.

Idea 1: Sunset is the key.
Sunset Shimmer being the only Sunset in the universe might have more significance than I previously imagined. She is the connection, and the reason rifts continue to be a problem is because of her. Sunset is a pony, but since she decided to live amongst hoomans she weakens the veil between realms. The rifts gradually become worse.

Idea 2: The Everfree Forest.
The Everfree Forest exists in both worlds, so it might be the biggest connection since they retrieved their powerful Geodes in Camp Everfree. Imagine people walking into it, going missing, and traces of their existence fades. It's one big portal to Equestria. The Everfree Forest is the biggest mystery, so why not make it the leading cause of magic growing.

Idea 3: Banished Villains
So, its apparent that some of the banished villains of the original series were banished to the human realm. A lot of the rifts, traces of magical artifacts, and previous villains all were said to be banished from Equestria and ended up in the human world. They still hold their power and connection, but just unable to return.

Idea 4: Twilight's Misuse of the Portal
In the story I wanted to write Twilight's frequent use of the portal, but it was without being granted access due to the portal closing after a certain amount of time. She then fixed the portal for it to open whenever she wanted. Leaving the door wide open for stuff to fall through. And I wanted to write Twilight using the portal a lot do some more research on the humans as well as visiting Flash Sentry. Because Flash Sentry in the original series is pretty much not seen after a few episodes after the first Equestria Girls movie. They may have wanted to throw out the character to not have a romantic sub-plot added to the series, but there was a fan theory that Flash died in the line of duty. With that theory in mind, Twilight seeks the original Flash Sentry she fell in love with by going through the portal to see him. And no one knew of her misuse until Princess Celestia was involved, realizing magic is becoming more prominent in the human world. Humans becoming more aware of their world made her fear.

What I wanted to do as far continuing the story.

In the next story I wanted to write was the portals opening and magic becoming too powerful, and people using magic for their own gain like the series has done multiple times but at a much greater scale.

It was one of the reasons the Rainbooms separated in the story, was because they could not fix the overall problem. They argued that it was their overuse of magic that made it become stronger. Sunset argued against it, but at the same time couldn't dismiss the possibility. She figured they would solve the issue like always, but Applejack argued they were growing tired of being superheroes since they wanted to start living their lives like normal. Sunset and Applejack argued the most about it, both of them agreeing that the overarching problem needed them more than their own personal philosophies. The entire group was split, wanting to see if they were the cause.

They weren't. The magic kept coming regardless. So that's when Sunset wanted to ask Twilight what they could do, but that's also when she didn't answer back for a long time.

Sci-Twi took it upon herself to also step in to help by creating the locket that absorbs magic. Of course, we saw how that went in the first story.

That madness grew and they all had to get involved again.

Now, what I didn't explain quite yet was Princess Celestia's involvement. Her seeing Sci-Twi in their world trying to learn their magic made her suspicious of the human world. As a result, she found Princess Twilight falling for a human herself, and that made her angry. So, she made Princess Twilight go back to human realm, retrieve all magic items, Sunset Shimmer, and their magical Geodes to close the portal forever. Stopping the rifts from growing and closing them in time.

Princess Twilight failed, and that got other ponies involved.

With Sunset still unable to choose between staying with the humans or going back home, she was distraught. The main focus was her relationship between both the Twilights. She loved both but could not choose. Her choice changed entirely between both stories. The first trying her hand with Princess Twilight, but unable to fully commit to it, and realizing that she would be busier with the kingdom than being in their relationship. The second story with Sci-Twi and realizing the damage she causes and the influence she has over all the people around her. It made her realize she was the key toward magic having affect over everyone. But she made that place her home and is reluctant to leave for Equestria.

The Rainbooms came together and realize their reluctance to solve the issue is causing the power to become too much for the world to handle. They argued again, the same issues as before but also realizing if they continue without magic ever stopping, then they needed to hand down their power to others wanting to stop it. Pinkie stepped in a thought if they were to see who was worthy, but also arguing that expectation causes too much pressure for others to handle. Then, the issue of putting it in the wrong hands, and finding willing participants to use them would take the rest of their time on earth to find.

They decided to continue and return being heroes, putting their lives on hold until they can find others or maybe solve the issue.

That's when the next story comes in.

Meanwhile, Princess Celestia sent Princess Twilight on a mission to close the portals from their world to keep the rifts from growing wider. And she sent Starlight Glimmer to the human realm to finally convince Sunset to return to Equestria. It was a failing plan since neither of them want to change anything and continue to have access to both worlds. Princess Celestia took it upon herself to convince them that their worlds will collide and cause chaos.
