Paul saw Rose crying as she entered her apartment. He stood up from the couch, "what happened?!"

She shook her head, pacing. "He doesn't want kids. I thought he did, but I overheard him tell his friends that he doesn't. That they'll just ruin his stuff and that he's just enjoying his life right now."

"Aw Rose. I'm sorry. I'm sure it was a misunderstanding. What happened when you told him about Sloane?" He rubbed her back as she sat on the couch and he sat next to her.

She scoffed, "I didn't! I couldn't! He's already made up his mind. So what's the point. This is all my fault. I should have told him sooner. Or listened to my instincts and not go out with him in the first place." She looked up at her dad as the tears began to fall again, "I'm an idiot. I was falling for him. I'm so stupid!"

Paul sighed, wrapping his arm around her shoulder, "of course you aren't Rose. Talk to him, I'm sure you could work it out."

She rested her head against his shoulder, "I don't think so."

Rose laughed as she watched Sloane lick her ice cream cone the next afternoon. She looked up from inside the ice cream shop to see Ransom outside, watching her. She groaned, handing her ice cream to her dad, "sit. I'll be back."

Paul nodded as he looked to see her go outside to talk to Ransom.

"Ransom, what are you doing here?"

He shrugged, "I wanted ice cream." He motioned to Sloane and Paul, "who is that? Why did you leave me last night? I tried calling you. You ignored me."

She groaned, looking at the ground, "it's my father Paul... and my daughter, Sloane."

"You have a kid? Are you kidding me? You lied to me! I asked you about your family Rose!"

She scoffed, "I never lied!"

He chuckled, "right. Because the best way to lie it to not tell the whole truth, right? How could you not have told me?"

"Because I wanted to make sure we were serious before I did. Every time I tell a guy I have a daughter, they run. I didn't want to scare you away. And you said you didn't want kids last night! You are enjoying your life and I don't want to ruin it."

He shook his head as he rested his hands on his hips, "that... that was just me being an idiot with my friends. You lied to me. I had a right to know before we started dating that you had a daughter Rose!" He lowered his voice, looking down at the ground, "I had a right to know before I developed feelings for you."

Rose nodded as she felt tears starting to well. She went to place her hand on his arm but he pulled away from her, "I'm sorry Ransom. Please."

"I can't do this right now Rose. I'm sorry."

She saw him hesitate before he turned and walked away, leaving her standing on the sidewalk crying. She heard Paul and Sloane come out of the ice cream shop as she felt Paul rubbing her back. She looked down as Sloane grabbed her hand.

"I'm sorry mama. Your boyfriends never like me."

Rose began to cry harder as she knelt on the ground in front of her, "no. It's not your fault sweet girl. It's never your fault." She wrapped Sloane in a hug as she heard her father above her.

"It isn't your fault either love. You'll find a man willing to stand up, I know you will."

Rose nodded as she wiped her face with her hands as she grabbed Sloane's hand.

Rose laid in bed, checking her messages to see no new ones. She groaned, messaging Ransom.

Please. Can we talk about this?
I'm sorry I didn't tell you

Ransom
. . .

You didn't even let me explain Ransom
Please
I don't tell any guy because they run
Or they aren't serious about me and she gets attached and they leave
I do it to protect my daughter
I'm sorry I lied to you

She sighed, watching three dots appear and disappear a few times.

Fine
I won't bother you anymore
Goodbye Ransom

She rolled over, facing the wall as she couldn't hold back the tears any longer, crying herself to sleep.

Ransom laid in bed, not knowing what to say, feeling his heart sink to his stomach as he read the last message. He didn't want to say goodbye, but he also didn't know what to say. "Fuck!" He threw his phone against the far wall, hearing it shatter onto the floor as he did. He groaned, getting out of bed to pick up the pieces, kneeling on the ground as he held the broken pieces in his hand.
