I really screwed up. Like really screwed up.
When I wake up on Saturday, I'm on the couch in Rick's living room. As I look around and adjust to my surroundings, I see most of my teammates sleeping on the floor. My head is pounding, an obvious sign that I'm hungover.
After Ella left, I went back into the backyard and drank as much as I could. That was a really stupid idea, because now I feel like I'm going to puke.
I somehow still have my phone on me, so I take it out and check my messages. I have a lot, jeez. Some from friends who had heard what happened and are trying to get my side of the story, some from the Ducks, telling me how much of an idiot I am, and three from my mom, asking me where I am. I'm about to be in deep shit with her.

Hi sweet boy, how is the party? Text me when you want me to come get you. (12:30 am)
Hello? (12:57 am)
Adam Joseph Banks, there better be a good reason why you're not answering me right now. (1:34 am)

I have to come up with a lie, and quickly. There's no way I'm getting out of this without one.

She gives my message a thumbs up, meaning I have maybe ten minutes until she'll be here. I run into Rick's bathroom and freshen up as best as I can. In my attempt to sober myself up, I'm honestly surprised I don't hurl.
After ten minutes, she texts me that she's outside and that's my cue. Justin is the only one awake right now, so I tell him to thank Rick for me and leave.
I can tell my mom is mad, because she doesn't say anything to me the entire car ride home. She actually doesn't say anything to me at all until we're inside. "Shower and get dressed. We're leaving in twenty minutes."
I raise my eyebrows at her in confusion. "For what?"
She gives me a look filled with disappointment. "The soccer showdown. You've been talking about watching Ella in this for weeks. Don't tell me you forgot."
"Oh yeah." I say, swallowing the lump in my throat. "I didn't forget Mom, I promise. I'm just tired, that's all."
Her expression softens, so I think she believes me. "Go take a hot shower honey. That'll wake you up."
I give her a quick hug and make my way upstairs. "Dress warm!" I hear her call from downstairs, and I know she'll kill me if I don't.
I shower longer than I probably should've, because it's already eleven by the time I get out. I quickly put on a sweatshirt and a pair of sweatpants, throw on my letterman, and run outside.
My parents are waiting in the car for me, and my mom gives me a soft smile once she sees me. Once we get to the stadium, we find the Walkers in the bleachers and sit with them. I dab Tyler up and turn my attention to the warm ups.
That's when I see her. She easily is and will always be the prettiest girl I've ever seen.
I watch as she takes her warmup shots, each one sending the ball into the back of the net. After she takes another shot, she jogs to the back of the line and scans the crowd. And that's when she sees me.
