Early the next day, Sean did grab me. He pulled me aside from the rest of our gang so we were alone.

"I've thought about your situation all night. Please try and understand that I can't stop Steve or protect your mother. That isn't in my power."

"I know."

"So here's what I have... If you need a place to stay, you need to find one."

"I can't leave my mum with THAT. I refuse to. I don't have anywhere anyway."

"Maybe talk to a grandparent or an aunt? You can't stay there Adam."

"I know." Sean ran a hand through his hair.

"However I can help you with the self harming and the no eating, okay?" I nodded.

"Okay." Sean smiled.

"Good. I have some extra bits and bobs in my lunch for you to have." I smiled too.

"Thanks Sean."

"No need to thank me. I'm just helping a friend."

Help he did. Everyday Sean gave me my own sandwich to eat, a piece of fruit and a packet of crisps. It was a good enough lunch as any.

I hadn't self harmed since that dreaded day. Mum's ribs were healing well. My own wound was completely gone, leaving only a scar. Steve hadn't hurt either of us. I almost felt happy. But of course, life doesn't work without the balance of hurt and happy.
