Months went past. Eventually we celebrated our six month anniversary. A week later, it was my birthday. I hadn't had a birthday since my dad passed so I told no one and did not expect anything.
I went to school and no one said a thing. Not even Lola. I would have thought she would remember but she didn't say anything not even a 'happy birthday'. I didn't care. I just put my head on and did my own school work.
At the end of the day, Lola met me outside of my science class. She had a mischievous twinkle in her eyes.
"Hey baby." I kissed her lightly on the lips. We didn't really do much more than that when we were at school.
"Hi handsome." She put her hand in mine and our fingers entwined. We walked out of school together but she surprised me by going the same way I usually go.
"Why are you going this way? You go left, I go right remember?" Lola smiled.
"I know. I just thought we could go to the park for a little bit." I felt confused.
"Why?"
"Does a girl need a reason to be with her boyfriend?" A smile tugged on the corner of my lips.
"Suppose not. Okay then, we'll go to the park."
We walked to the park together. The park wasn't empty but it wasn't full either. It was the end of a Tuesday school day so why should there be? However, Lola didn't lead me to the swings or the playground part. She took me to the forest area. This area was just filled with trees. Not the ugly or terrifying sort but the pretty type of forest. Lola didn't lead me far in. Just far enough that we wouldn't be seen by anyone else. She then surprised me by pushing me against a tree. Her hands moved to my chest and she kissed me. It was a different kiss this time. It was more passionate. Her lips tasted of strawberry. She usually put a shimmer of fruity lip gloss on.
"Woah... What's all this about?" I asked, pulling back a bit.
"Well... It's your birthday... You're seventeen now... I'm sixteen... And I think I want to try." I hesitated, trying to understand. Then it clicked.
"Try? You don't mean... Sex?" Lola looked awkwardly around, avoiding my eyes.
"Yes I do. I want to try it. But, I only want to do it if you're ready too." I thought for a minute or two before pulling Lola close.
"I want to." We kissed again. My hands were on her waist. I ached to move my hands upwards so I did but slowly. She didn't stop me until her hands were on her breasts. Jesus Christ, she had nice tits...
"Maybe not here..." She whispered softly, reaching up to pull my hands away. I let her move my hands away.
"Where? You can't come back to my house."
"My house. Sean is going to Carla's house and my parents are out. I have a key and it will just be us." I nodded.
"Okay. Just let me go to my house first and get changed."
"Okay." Lola took my hand and we walked to my house.
****
I opened the door of my house and held it open for Lola.
"I'll shut it. You go into the front room and find your parents." She said. I nodded and walked into the living room.
"SURPRISE!" The lights snapped on at the same time that party poppers were pulled, releasing confetti in my direction. Once the confetti had cleared, I looked around to see my mum and my friends (minus Sean and Carla) standing among balloons and confetti. A table had been covered with a white cloth with bowls of party snacks around a chocolate cake, decorated in unlit candles. On the walls were banners and ribbons.
Lola appeared behind me, kissed the back of my neck then went to join Leon and Jay.
"Did you think we would forget?" Leon asked with a smirk.
"Kind of?" Mum hugged me and kissed my cheek.
"Never." She whispered.
"Presents!" Lola squealed. She picked up a wrapped parcel and held it out to me. I took it from her and held it in my hands. I liked guessing what it could possibly be. It was squishy. I tore off the wrapping paper to reveal a teddy bear. The teddy was pale blue and clutched a soft heart saying 'For My Boyfriend'. It was pretty cute.
"Aw thanks baby." Lola glowed with happiness. I couldn't help but smile back.
"So that means it's our turn. See... Jay and I pitched in together to get your present so I hope you like it." Leon told me. He held out a parcel wrapped in paper with a ribbon tied around it. I took it, surprised at how hard it felt. I took off the ribbon and paper and laughed at the skateboard inside.
"You can join us at the skate park now." Jay told me with a smile.
"Thanks guys." I placed the skateboard on the arm of the sofa, placing Lola's teddy on top.
"And now for my present." Mum handed out a box that was wrapped. I took it. It just felt like a box. I took off the paper and lifted the lid of the box. Inside was several goodies. There was a ten pound note, brand new earphones, HMV gift card, CD of some music, a new IPod, a journal and some felt pens.
"Thanks Mum. They're really cool." I hugged my mother in my gratitude. She kissed my hair before pulling away.
"You've also got some new pyjamas and a few cards from relatives on your bed." I nodded.
"Okay. I'm just going to go get dressed." I gathered up my presents and went upstairs. As promised, Mum had laid out new pyjamas and the cards. She had also put out some jeans and a new blue shirt. I got dressed quickly then headed back downstairs. Someone had put on some music. Leon was dancing with Lola while Jay messed about with a red balloon, trying to keep it in the air. Mum was nowhere to be seen.
"Where's my mum?" I asked. Leon spun Lola towards me. I caught her, placing my hands on her waist.
"Went out with a phone call. She told us to help ourselves with the food but not the cake."
"Don't mind if I do..." Jay said, letting his balloon fall to the floor and picking up a paper plate. We all followed suit, loading our plates with sandwiches, crisps, sausage rolls, boiled eggs and more. We then gathered around or on the sofa, eating and joking. It felt amazing to be with friends and not have to worry about a thing.
When Mum came back in, she lit the candles and everyone sung happy birthday. I blew out the candles and wished for my life to get better. If everyday was like this one, I would be happy.
I cut the cake and we all had a slice. We had one more slice each before everyone started heading home.
"Mum?" She was starting to tidy away all the plates and food.
"What's up, Adam?" I eyed Lola, who was putting her shoes on in the hallway.
"Can I go to Lola's for a little bit?" Mum hesitated then nodded.
"Okay then. It's your birthday after all. Just please be home before ten okay?" I nodded.
"Sure. Love you Mum."
"Love you too. Oh and Adam?" I turned back to look at her.
"Yeah?"
"She's a keeper." I cringed.
"Thanks Mum." I left with Lola and we set off to her house.
