“That was seven years ago, Baekhyun. You don't have to—”
“I have to, Taeyeon. I want to,” Baekhyun simply stated as he took a step back from Taeyeon, clutching his gym bag with one hand and shoving his other hand into his pockets.
“What's that supposed to mean?” Taeyeon asked, confused.
She's not sure what he's been trying to tell her since last night at the park, but she wants to know what it is— she thinks she knew what it is, but she just doesn't want to make any assumptions that will hurt her and him in the end. She'd like to hear it from him, but he's refusing to tell her anything.
“Taeyeon…” he trailed off, his gaze fixed on the ground.
“You can tell me anything, Baekhyun. What is it?” she reassured as she bravely took a step forward in front of him and almost had a second thought of putting her hand on his shoulder, but when she did, he glanced at it before returning his gaze to her.
He flashed a broad smile, but his eyes told a different story. “I… It's nothing; I just want to keep you safe for as long as I can; after all, we're friends, right? Also, I apologize for making you feel uncomfortable at the park last night; I just… It will never happen again. I'm truly sorry.”
“It's fine. You don't have to apologize for that; you didn't do anything anyway,” she reassured him, patting his shoulder before removing her hand.
He gave a slight nod. “Well, I'll leave you to your business now, and please be more careful, Taeyeon.”
“I will,” she said in a singsong tone, quickly turning around and acting like she's going to start vlogging just so he doesn't notice she's kind of happy she did ran into him this morning.
She heard him mumble something that she didn't quite understand, and it took her a few moments to notice his footsteps moving away from her. That was a bad move for her.
“Breakfast!” she exclaimed as she turned around to see that Baekhyun hadn't strayed too far from her.
He had just saved her from embarrassment, so she figured she should at least ask him for breakfast as her thank you. But she hopes it has a different meaning for Baekhyun, or that she can just say it— that nothing they've done since going to California hasn't been about rebuilding their friendship, but about continuing their unfinished story from seven years ago.
“Baekhyun-ah!”
He abruptly came to a halt and turned to face her. “Yeah?” he asked.
Taeyeon took three big steps forward, putting herself in front of him, looking up a little because he's a little taller than her, while he looks down at her with a strange expression, waiting for what she's going to say.
Baekhyun has always been the one who has asked Taeyeon to go out with him, and now it's time for her to make a move if she does really want him to know how much she truly loves him, no matter how many years have passed.
She sighed heavily. “Would you like to go get something to eat?”
When he heard her ask that, he stood almost frozen in place, as if he was dreaming or something, so he didn't get to respond right away, causing her to overthink what she had just done.
