Taeyeon never meant to hurt the man she loved, but telling Mr. Lee that she had to break up with Baekhyun was the only way she could stop all the hatred directed at her and him. She was aware that he was receiving a lot of criticism for dating someone older than him, but he doesn't seem to mind because he is always concerned with her.
But when Baekhyun asked if she valued their company more than her relationship with him, she had no choice but to lie, even though she knew it would break him. She thought it would be the simplest way to end their relationship, but seeing him cry made her heart break even more.
“Stop apologizing…” he said, surprising her when he suddenly walked up in front of her, just standing there with his both hands on his side, his tears wiped away but his eyes clearly red. “None of this was your fault; please stop apologizing.”
She looked up at him, about to wipe her tears away, but he beat her to it, and what he did made her cry even more. “How can he be so caring even in this situation?” she wondered.
And she thought he was going to hug her because he was about to reach out his arms, but he put both his arms back to his sides and took a step back to give them some space.
“I'm sorry, Baekhyun…” she whispered. “I'm—”
Baekhyun can't stop himself from pulling Taeyeon in for a hug, despite his desire not to touch her or come close to her, so she can be more comfortable with their conversation. He hugged her. A hug that could mean more than missing each other.
“I don't know what to do…” she whispered between sobs as they hugged each other.
“Shh… It'll be fine,” he kept saying, even though the truth is, it won't be.
“…and that's all we could do to protect ourselves, our careers, this is for the best, and you know that,” she said quietly, prompting Baekhyun to slowly let go and take a step back from her.
He wiped his tears away with his right hand and stared at the floor for a moment, as if processing what Taeyeon said. Then he realized she was right, but he needed to get something out first. His thoughts on what is going on.
“No,” he said quietly as he looked up at the woman he loved, who was now hugging herself as tears streamed from her eyes. He reached out with his thumb to wipe them away and quickly drew his hand back.
“No what?”
“I don't think it was all we could do, I'm just certain that I'm willing to fight for what we have now…” he sighed deeply as he continued, “…but I guess I was wrong to assume that we're going to fight and get through this together; I'm the one who should apologize to you, Taeng.”
“Baekhyun… I love you…” she said sincerely between sobs.
“But not enough to fight for me…” he continued, weakly smiling as they exchanged stares. “…fight for this love, fight for this relationship, and I see that now, Taeng.”
What he said hurts her, but it's the truth because she can't even fight for their love, but she must do so for herself and for him. This problem must be resolved immediately, and she must carry out her responsibilities.
“Baekhyun…” her voice cracked, and he knew what was going to happen because he looked at her and nodded, his shoulder slumped in defeat.
“Just say it, Taeyeon.”
“I'm sorry once again, but this…” she began, standing straight and looking directly into his eyes. “…this will be our official breakup, not because I want to, but because I have to… We have to… I'm breaking up with you, Baekhyun…”
