VERONICA

I checked the fully-loaded magazine before pushing it back up into the gun and locking it on safety. I hadn't used one in a long time, but I definitely missed using this instead of the traditional weaponry, though I still did intend to bring my sword.

"What are guns gonna do against angels?" Warren snickered at the notion and continued tying the laces of his boots.

"It's enough to slow them down. Incapacitation can do more damage than you think." I dropped the pistol into the holster attached to my pants and fixed my clothes.

He raised an eyebrow. "You just said what Tarrin told us during training."

"And?"
"And that just means you're unoriginal."

I turned on my heel and grabbed the sheathed sword I'd rested against the bench. Strapping it on my back, I gave him a squinted smile and leaned forward. "Cry about it."

His laugh followed me as I headed over to the full body mirror and fixed myself. I wore a bodysuit, black of course, and my hair was tied into a low, tight ponytail. The weapons branded around my body were my accessories, and the power coursing through my veins was my lifeline. The only thing I wished to get rid of was the building apprehension that threatened to claw out of my throat.

With the Midas Headquarters blocked off from the public (a request I put in to someone I had texted earlier), we had to teleport to one of our international branches where weapons and gear were made available to us. As far as I knew, the agents in the Seattle branch were dispatched to a mission in the second realm. When they come back to the warehouse we were in, they'd be none the wiser.

"You ever plan on forgiving him?" Warren fixed his weapons when he appeared a few feet behind me. He also had a sword strapped on his back, his cropped blond hair slightly wet from the shower he'd just taken before preparing.

"Forgiving who?" I asked without my eyes straying from my reflection.

"Lore," he said frankly.

I sighed and picked up the ear piece I'd laid on the bench from earlier and inserted it into my left ear. "Not that it's any of your business, but the jury's still out."

"Seriously? The guy's your soulmate. He's your husband too, might I add." He crossed his arms and watched me through the mirror's reflection. "He would also kill any being that would be so stupid enough to even think about coming close to you if you decide to separate. You gotta forgive him, V, or the universe will go to shit."

"So, it's either forgive him, or sign the universe's inevitable death away to a psychotic god that can't handle jealousy?"

He nodded vehemently. "See? You get it."

I turned to him with a wide smile and squinted eyes. "How wise of you," I said, sarcasm dripping off my words.

Pushing past him, I opened the door and made a quick scan to make sure everyone was ready. Though the plan was last-minute, everyone managed to pull through and get ready except for Lucifer who, quite insistingly, chose to stay behind and 'not involve himself in crass matters.'

"I can't believe you're alive," Olivia poked Lore's cheek with wide eyes and a dropped jaw. "Are you real?"

Lore, who looked like he was seconds away from burning a hole through the wall with his eyes, remained stoic as she continued her prodding. I felt compelled to stop her, mostly because it would be beneficial on her part if she did but also because Lore still seemed uncomfortable around the others, though I stopped myself before I could even try.
