VERONICA
Gideon continued to orient us on what we would do when our first assignment arrives and how we would do everything from now on as a unit.
He also mentioned how most units live together, but we all agreed that it was something we could do once we've all become well-acquainted.
"You will all be summoned once our first assignment arrives. Don't expect anything too big yet, Tarrin might just give us some bullshit mission to toy with us." Gideon states, dismissing us from the room as he said words of goodbye and good luck after.
Gideon immediately disappeared, Matt running out of the room alongside Olivia and Taylor, clearly speeding to someplace else.
Alone with Warren, my phone suddenly received a text message.
Tarrin: Come to my office. Now. Bring Warren with you.
I rolled my eyes while showing Warren the text I received.
"What does he want now?" Warren asked.
"Hell if I know."
I snapped my fingers and once again, the darkness wraps around us as it answers my call. And, once again, the darkness unfolded to reveal Tarrin looking at the piece of paper he was perusing last night.
Only now, he was holding it like he wanted to tear it apart. He had anger written all over his face, which was rare since his emotions were mostly limited to boredom, happiness, and apathy.
"What?" I asked flatly.
Tarrin looked up and acted as if he didn't even hear us teleport in. He sighed loudly then leaned back, bringing his finger to his mouth to bite it then begun looking me up and down.
"What?" I asked again in a sharper tone.
Tarrin leaned forward then pushed the paper forward, inviting me to read it.
I grabbed the paper then turn it over to see an invitation.
You are regretfully invited to the God of Death and Darkness' celebration of the victory of the gods against the rebellious uprising of the dark angels. Come when the sun gives way to the moon; sinners are always welcome.
Below the message was a drawing of a raven eating something from a skull, the mark of the God of Death and Darkness.
"What does he want? Why were you invited?" I asked, redirecting my attention to Tarrin who looked tired.
Tarrin sighed. "I've met him twice many centuries ago. He rarely visits the mortal world, but he's one of the most intelligent and internecine gods I've ever met, and I've met all of them.
"My guess is either he wants something from me, or his guest list is short and he needed more people. Either way, you're going."
"Me? Why?" I ask with a bored tone, but I was really mad internally. I have no plans to meet him or even go to the god's party.
"Not just you, but all of you. Your unit. A wraith I've been trying to kill for centuries is attending, and I want you to kill him. That will be your first mission."
