VERONICA

We arrived at the inn at sundown. The innkeeper gaped at the sight of us as we entered the small building. She bowed to the fae prince and greeted us all in a foreign tongue.

She led us upstairs and unlocked three doors, the only rooms she had, I realized. Cassian thanked her, bringing his shoulder over Nixon's as he supported the once-again-unconscious angel and led him into the biggest room at the end of the hall.

Taylor slid her arms around Warren as she supported him too and entered the room at the middle of the hall, leaving Lore and I.

Lore looked at me and extended his hands, demanding me to support him too as they did. I rolled my eyes at him. "You can walk, you ass."

I strode for the door at the other end of the hall and entered the room. Large windows on the left streamed the sunlight on to the four-poster bed at the right side of the room. A bookshelf full of leather-bound books stood next to a doorway which I assumed was the bedroom.

I removed my coat and bag, then undid my braid by the fireplace next to the door Lore now entered. I sat on one of the sofas facing the hearth and slumped into it.

The god sat next to me and stared at me. I ignored him for a few seconds before I returned it. The man really liked staring at everything.

"What?" I asked.

"Aren't you going to "patch me up", darling?" He said as he gestured air quotes with his hands.

I scoffed at him. "You're annoying."

"Do you need me to test if our bargain still works?"

I quickly stood up and moved closer to him. "You wouldn't dare."

He stood, his other hand clutching his bandaged wound. "When it comes to you? I'd be a fool not to dare."

He gave me a smile as he grabbed my wrist and pulled me close to him. "Elvira darling." He goaded. "Tend to my wounds."

My body straightened and my eyes widened as I unwillingly walked towards the side of the hearth and opened my bag to get the materials I needed. My feet led me to the bathroom and grabbed the first aid box inside one of the drawers and filled a shallow basin with water from the sink.

"You asshole." I seethed as I sat next to him and lifted his shirt.

He simply smiled when I removed his shirt and worked on removing the bandages. "Anyone who has this much power over you should be treated with utmost care and respect, princess. You might want to tread lightly."

My hands reached for the scissors to cut open the bandages. "I wish my own hands would listen and shove this blade down your throat."

"Gods. We need to do something to that mouth of yours."

"You could kill me already. How about that?"

His lips lifted and he ran his hands through his disheveled black curls. "I wouldn't want you to die," He closed his eyes and leaned back on the sofa. "Yet."

"Ever the gentleman, Lore."

He opened his eyes, "I'm not a man. I'm a god, darling. And one of the most powerful at that."
