Chapter twenty-two
Friday came around and it was time to meet Hailie. I was so nervous; I’m not the best with young people. She looks like the type to bullshit she likes you and thinks she has to put up with you. But Marshall did say to me, she wanted to meet me, she even suggested me coming over, or it could’ve been Marshall putting words in her mouth. I won’t judge her honestly the poor girl has been through a lot, which I can relate too. I pack my bag and waited for Marshall to text me to go over his apartment to go too his home. I already have gotten use to driving in his car with him. I hope his house doesn’t top it.
Marshall and I have kept our distances most nights. I would imagine him coming into my room late at night, coming into my bed and hold me and caress me like he use to do late at night. But he never comes; I have to keep reminding myself, he does love me. I just don’t think like I do. I hold my anger back from him, for so many reasons, so it shows mostly in pain and sadness which Marshall mistaken for the worry and hurt of my father.
30% of the time it is my father.
20% of the time it is Marshall.
“You nervous” asked Marshall. I chuckled, “a little” he chuckled back, “don’t worry, she loves you already, you two will get along fine” said Marshall. “Why are we going to see her, again?” I asked what a stupid question. He smiled faintly, “well…it’s complicated to explain” said Marshall. I questioned myself, what is so complicated? Deep down I felt as though I knew the answer; I smiled to myself. Yet the feeling I was standing in a quiet room wanting to scream still traveled through my mind constantly. Why do I need to scream? The urges are killing me. I don’t feel the same anymore.
We arrived at Marshall’s house which as I expected; it was big, and probably expensive. I took a deep breath and thought be open minded, be the sweetheart that you assume Marshall loves. Marshall opened the door and let me in first, it was like a cave, but it strangely reminded me of my childhood home. There was a hallway that, when you enter, it is the first thing you’ll see besides the kitchen on the left. I felt strangely at home, I smiled and took another deep breath to smell the cleanness of the house. Any moment I felt Hailie would come running to hug her father. It dawned on me then Marshall is almost forty, but his age does not affect him.
Hailie came out of the living room on the right and hugged Marshall. She was even more beautiful in person. She had Em’s eyes, her smile could light up the room, and it is so bright and full of life; just like Marshall’s face sometimes when he smiles. It was like looking at a female version of Marshall. Hailie set her eyes on me, her smile glowed through her lips, and normally I would feel obligated to smile around younger children, but her smile was so beaming I smile unconditionally back. She look really excited to see me, “This is Natalia, Hail” said Marshall. “Hi Hailie” I said, I sounded awkward, “dzień dobry” said Hailie, (hello). I was astound how she said hello in Polish perfectly and went through all that trouble to learn it to impress me. “WOW!” I said Marshall burst out chuckling; amazed she spoke a different language. “Wiesz Polskiej?” I asked, (You know Polish). “Not really, but we’re part Polish I figured this would be a perfect time to learn something” said Hailie.
I look over at Em, “I didn’t know you were part Polish” I said. “Never occurred to me” he said. “Well, if you like to learn anymore, I’m your own personal Polish dictionary” I said. She chuckled, “I like her dad” said Hailie, I smiled and figured this isn’t so hard. Marshall and Hailie showed me around their home and after that we all went swimming in their backyard. I’ve never had so much fun with a sixteen year old ever before! “So Hail! What do you think you’re going to do for your sixteenth birthday?” I ask. I sat on the edge of the pool, with some wine in my hand, “Oh, I don’t know yet I rather just skip over it” said Hailie. “What? That’s crazy!” I said, “Every girl has a sweet sixteen” I add. “Yeah but” she glance over at Marshall who was on the phone, “I rather have my dad there too” said Hailie. “I’m sure he will be” I said, she swam towards me, “can you come too?” she ask. “Um, well, if you would like me too” I said. “Yes I do! I like you!” said Hailie. I chuckled, “well, you only knew me for a few hours” I said I took a sip of wine. “So, you got a soft voice, you make every word melt as you talk, no wonder dad-“she caught herself before she could say anything. “What sweetie?” I ask, “nothing, I just..have notions that daddy likes you sometimes” she said. She held onto the ledge of the pool.
