Laney’s POV continued…
I don’t know what could be worse, the fact the tension in the room was growing by the second, we can’t reach daddy, or the room was too bright and white that it blinded it you. “She can’t be having the baby it’s too early” Hailie said. Her voice sounded unsettled as if she carefully timed the baby’s due date. Whitney sat quietly next to me as she kicked her feet back and forth. You could tell she was unsettled too; the sharpest or loudest noise can make her start to cry.
“Did you try calling dad again?” Hailie whined. I scoffed, “I left seven voice mails, and three text messages…would you like me to hop on the plane to go fetch him?!” I exclaimed. Hailie stuck her middle finger up to me and started to pace the floor…again. “Hailie you’re going to wear a trail in the floor” I said. Hailie scoffed, “Leave me alone.”
“Girls!” We jumped from our seats. I twisted my hat nervously in my hands. Uncle Dre walked up to us and gave each of us a hug. I was relieved to see him. But honestly I don’t know we are so nervous. I have questioned it since we arrived at the hospital. Probably because Natalia gave us a panic attack when I was driving to the hospital as the labor pains grew. I gave Hailie a hug and said, “Everything will be ok.” Hailie had a tear come down her face, “I just want daddy” she mumbled.
“I got a hold of your father” Uncle Dre said. I sighed out of relief; at least one of us got a hold of dad. “Oh thank God” I whispered to myself. “Where is he?” I questioned. “He’s on a plane right now from California.” Uncle Dre sighed out of frustration, “Your father wanted to be for this…” “They won’t let us in” I growled, “Why?” “Because we’re not family” I mimicked the nurse from before.
“Family is not defined whose blood we share but who we would give our blood too!” I shouted across the way to the desk. The old lady ignored me as she turned a page in her magazine. She knew our situation and she still refused to let us know what was going on with Natalia. The baby could be born by now and we wouldn’t know.
My grandparents came soon after and demanded to see Natalia. But the nurse said as she said to me, “Only family.” Those words pierced me! The only person who could see Natalia is- “Renee” Whitney jumped from her seat and hugged Renee. I wasn’t use to calling her grandma. “Marshall is coming as fast as he could…” my grandmother said. “Well-Well…how’s Natalia does anyone know?!” Renee demanded. “They won’t tell us anything” I said. Renee gave a glare to the nurse at the desk. “Oh really?” she snared, “I’ll be back in a moment”.
“Yes, hi…my name is Renee Trimmoushski I’m here to see my daughter…” she said coldly. “Who’s your daughter miss?” “Natalia Kamila Mathers born July 19th 1990…” Renee said. “Oh, I only asked for her name dear” “Well, I’m telling you something lady…This is my daughter’s first child…my son-in-law is away at business he is currently on his way as we speak. My daughter is four days early with her delivery…and she is gonna deliver alone unless you don’t let us in. Those people may not be her blood, but the child in her is. Now we’re going in in see her.”
I wasn’t sure what Renee said, but the nurse kept her head down as we all walked pass her to Natalia’s room. We tip-toed in the room as we heard the monitors going. Natalia looked a lot better; she seemed a lot more relaxed. “Mama!” she exclaimed as she held out her arms. Her arms had needles and tape wrapped on her as they dangled. Renee embarrassed Natalia following my grandparents.
“Where is Marshall?” she cried, “No one would tell me where anybody was” she cried. Renee rested her head on Natalia’s as she held her close on the bed. “Marshall is on his way right now baby…you just relax” my grandma whispered. “I’m so proud of you girls” Natalia whispered as smiles began to bloom from our faces. Whitney crawled on the bed and cuddled under Natalia’s arm.
“All right I’ll tell her…just hurry she’s close.” “Slim said that, the plane had to make an emergency landing because of a thunderstorm” Dre said sadly. “What!” Natalia exclaimed, She rose a bit from the bed her eyebrows came together and her the monitor was beeping fast. “No that can’t happen! He has to be here!” Natalia demanded. Everyone tried to settle her down before the nurse came in.
“Natalia…Natalia…Natalia!” Dre rushed over to the bed and grasped her hand. “Shh…listen to me honey” his voice soften, Natalia gave Dre her full attention but still looked pretty angry. “He said to me to tell you…he loves you…he’s sorry so sorry and know that he’s with you right now” “He’s praying for you right now” he mumbled. Natalia smiled before another contraction came. Her face cringed as she cried in pain.
A doctor came in and chuckled, “We’re drawing closer Mrs. Mathers aren’t we?” “Not without my husband!” she cried. “Well like it or not…husband or not…you’re about to deliver” he said. Natalia’s eyes popped from her head and refused to deliver till my father came. She threated to keep her legs close until he came. Everyone begged and plead for her not to do that. The doctor chuckled over and over as if he was used to this. “Don’t worry I’m use to this” he said, “She can have only two members of the family when she delivers.” The nurses came in with the equipment which made Natalia even more nervous. “I’ll stay with her” Dre insisted. Of course Renee said she will stay too.
We left the room looking over our shoulders as if it was our last time to ever see Natalia. They set up legs and covered it with a blue tarp. This only made Hailie more nervous as she continued to pace back and forth in the hallway. I tapped my foot nervously on the floor as I bit down on my fingernails. I was so anxious to see my new sibling and I was so nervous what if something happens to Natalia? Nothing will ever be the same in our home.

The pain was unbearable even more that Marshall was not here. All kinds of thoughts were rushing through my mind as the doctor counted to ten as I pushed down. Each time I realize my breath he would say, “We’re almost there” “its coming” “I could see its head.” “You said that five breathes ago!” I snapped. I was wet from head to toe in sweat. I couldn’t take pushing anymore. I wanted to give up. I closed my legs and cried “I give up!” Everyone looked at each other as the doctor tried to encourage me to keep pushing.
“Look…If you had one shot…or one opportunity to seize everything you ever wanted…one moment…would you capture it…or just let it slip” I glanced over to my mother as she glanced over to Dre. She nodded her head as he began to sing. “His palms are sweaty knees weak arms heavy there’s vomited on his sweater already mom’s spaghetti he’s nervous…but on the surface he looks clam and ready to drop bombs.”
Everyone soon joined in. It encourages me to keep pushing and I did not stop. I kept remembering that one concert that I went to that I saw Marshall in and he sang ‘Lose Yourself.’ How his energy just gave me life and gave me strength. The more I thought about it the more I kept pushing without stopping. “So…here…I go…this…is…my…shot…feet fail me not…because this maybe the only opportunity that I got!”
