Chapter thirty-six

Marshall’s POV:

I woke up on the couch; it felt like I slept for centuries. I turned off the TV and slowly got up from the couch. I felt around the dark house looking for a switch. I heard giggles coming from Hailie’s room. I slowly started climbing the stairs up to Hail’s room. I opened the door and saw my two girls sitting on the bed reading together. I smiled, and chuckled “Hi dad” said Hailie. “Hey baby” I said softly. “Look who up” said Natalia, she closed her book and placed it on the bed. “Yeah how long have I been out?” I asked. “Two hours” she said softly. My eyes widen, “Woah” I said, I rubbed my chest. “Hail, why don’t you go find a pizza menu and ask your sisters what they want to eat” I said. Hailie climbed out of the bed and walked downstairs. “You kept Hail Company for two hours?” I asked, with surprise. “Yeah, I didn’t want to wake you so Hail and I read the book together” she said softly. Her vivid voice came so soothing; it could’ve knocked you off your feet. “You didn’t have too, really all you are doing for me…” I said with gratefulness.

She rose from the bed and came close to me. Her sweet scent drove me crazy as I tried to keep standing. She began to lift her arms; I flinched, “I’m just giving you a hug, Marshall”. I accepted her offer as she put her arms under my arms to grasp my back for support. Her touch was so soft and warm, “Why are you doing all this?” I muttered, “Because I love you and I love the girls”. I sighed and rested my head on her shoulder. “Let me take you to your bed, you need as much rest as possible” she said. “I’m fine” I mumbled weakly. “If I take you down stairs will you lay down?” I nodded and let her help me on the couch.

She laid me flat on my back and pulled the covers over me, “Its cold early this time of year” I said. She chuckled, “Yes, it’ll get warm I promise” she said warmly. I smiled and closed my eyes. She sat on the floor and caresses my face; I could feel her engagement ring on my cheek. The cold steel reminded me of the person she’ll be marrying. I cannot allow her; I wish I could tell her now. But this fucking medication they gave me is enough to wipe out anybody! “Natalia” I pushed out of my tired lips. “I’m here” I had words and thoughts going through me like a train. “Good” I forced out, I had to say something else before I lose to sleep. “Stay with me?” I mumbled finally, “I will, I’m right here” she said softly. I let myself go to sleep when I heard her say that.

“Natalia” Whitney rushed down the stairs, I turned around and put my finger to my lips; signaling her to keep it down. “We’re ready to order”, I got up from the floor and picked Whitney up and asked her what pizza they wanted. Hailie and Laney followed; Hailie had a homework question, which I offered to help her with. I wanted Marshall to get as much rest as possible. For a moment I felt like I was taking on the role of their mother. I felt pretty good about it, I felt like a pure adult and for a moment, I thought this could be a sign of my future. As I held Whit in my arms I smiled to myself and help Hailie with her homework. The one thing I can barely stand is math; Laney was looking at her dad from the hallway, as he slept peacefully. “Laney” I whispered, she turned her head to the kitchen, “Daddy is ok, he is sleeping” I said. “Is it ok if I watched TV?” she asked. “Yes, but just keep the volume lowered”. She quietly went into the living room and sat on the pull out couch.

After dinner the girls went to sleep, I walked into the living room and sat next to Marshall when he was just waking up. “I slept two hours again?” he had his sleepy voice. I chuckled, “A little bit more, it’s ok the doctor says it’s normal” I said. “I’m so sore” he said in pain, “it’s ok, shhh” I said. I caress his chisveled cheeks, “Shh, let’s get something into your stomach”. I gave him two slices of pizza which he scarfed down pretty quickly. “I don’t think I can sleep tonight” he said, he leaned his head back on the chair. “I bet you wouldn’t you slept most of the day” I said. “I might just make up more beats for my next album”. My eyes widen and I became excited, “your next album?” I said calmly. He smiled and chuckled, “Yes, I got some good stuff”. My smile of excitement became noticeable, “Oh sorry, I’m use to reacting like that, you should’ve seen me when Not Afraid came on the radio” I said. I tried to erase my smile off. Marshall chuckled, “I can imagine” I smiled at him. Our gaze meet and everything felt as though it stopped moving. My heart pound out of control and my breathing stopped.
