Chapter seventy-three

The weeks turned into mid-January. The month went into the beginning of February. Everyday was the same as the last; but the tension of the birthdate was growing in the house. The constant threating phone calls also adds onto the tension. There are nights where Marshall don’t sleep anymore again. He’s too afraid of a break-in. He sat every night downstairs in the living room with a bat and waited…waited…waited for something to happen. Ever since we got a note saying: One day she won’t come home from school; I became afraid to send the girls to school. Marshall and I had no choice but to hope and pray. So far for most of the month they came home and we became more at ease. We were more at ease when president’s vacation came.

“Mom! I’m going to school” said Hailie. I was sitting in the kitchen doing paper work I already sent Whitney to school. I keep an eye on what they wear now; Hailie wore a brown leather jacket with reddish-brown skinny jeans. No jewelry, her hair up in a ponytail and a white t-shirt with black sneakers. “Ok have a good day baby” I said, “give mommy a kiss” I mumbled she placed a kiss on my cheek as she grabbed an apple. “Love you!” she shouted running out to the bus. “Love you too babe!”

Meanwhile upstairs; Marshall was putting the nursery together. I wasn’t allowed in there for a couple of weeks. The door was always closed even the girl weren’t allowed in there. I assumed he had to be putting together a big surprise either for the baby or me. I was hoping to put up some family photos around the baby’s crib during the week. Marshall practically lived in that room! I walked upstairs and knocked on the door, “Marshall…?” I said. “Yes baby?” “I’m going to the store I’ll be back soon” I said.

--

I shopped around Baby’s R Us for a few odds and ends for the baby. I catch myself sometime talking to my belly. “What about this baby food darling? It is chicken with carrots and broccoli? “it kicked; “oh!” I chuckled pleasantly as I placed the food in the basket.

RING! RING! RING! RING!

I pulled out my phone, “Hello?” I asked,

 “Baby is Hailie with you?”

I was stunned, “Uh no. She should be home by now she don’t have any after school meetings or cheerleading practice today”

“Well, she’s not picking up her cell-phone” Marshall’s voice had hints of fear in it. My heart raced as the grip on the basket grew tighter. I stood in shock thinking of all the places Hailie could be.

“I’m coming home!” I said. I left the basket wear it was and rushed home. Two police cars stood in front of the house. I grew more anxious to get inside. Whitney must be crying her eyes out. Marshall’s legs must be shaking as he bites down on his nails. I can only imagine the tension in the house. The door was open as I walked inside; two policemen were talking to Marshall as Whitney was sitting in the living room watching cartoons. Her hands were at the edge of her mouth as she kicked her legs back and forth nervously. It only made it worse when a cop was questioning her without my permission.

“Are you Mrs. Mathers?” asked the cop. He was a young cop; too young to question me I felt. “Yes” I said, “Can I ask you a couple of questions?” he flipped through his notebook. “In a moment please, excuse me” I brush pass the cop over to Whitney. She popped out of her chair and grabbed my legs.

“Mommy!” she exclaimed. I picked her up as her tears started to flow from her face. “Shh oh my boo…shhh” I whispered. “Um, excuse me…are you her mother?” the cop asked. It was a woman, a real cocky one too. She looks just as young as me. Not minding the cop, I said “yes.” “Her biological one?” she questioned, “no.” “Then I’m sorry you can’t be here right now…you’re interfering with police duty.”

“Oh God!” Marshall exclaimed. I sighed softly as my temper flared. “Whitney baby... go hang with daddy” I put her down as she ran towards Marshall. I cleared my throat, “I know I’m not her biological mother…but her biological mother is the reason why you are here” I growled. Her eyes widen as she tried to talk over me and make me feel afraid, I wasn’t afraid and I never would be. “You don’t come into my house and question a child without parental guidance…Whitney is fucking eight years old! The girl doesn’t even know what’s going on! That’s why she is scared! Not because she knows something! Now you wanna talk to someone you talk to me or my husband! I may not be Whitney or Hailie’s biological mother and a pre-nup may not have been signed yet, but God as my witness I’m the first thing they see when they wake and the last thing they see before the sleep!” I shouted.

The house was silence; you could hear a pin drop. I cooled my temper and sighed, “Now would you like to ask me some questions about Hailie…officer?” I questioned.  Ring! Ring! Ring!  My heart dropped when the house phone started to ring, I will die if it was Kim. I’ll never hear the end of this. Marshall rushed over to the phone and quickly answered it.

“Hello?” he quickly answered. He held his hand to his heart.

“Dad”

“Hailie?” he questioned.

“Dad…I’m at Grandma Renee’s house…Could you come and pick me up?” she cried.

“Daddy is coming. You stay there!” Marshall slammed the phone down and rushed out to his car…Without his shoes.

--

Marshall arrived home with Hailie close to his side. My heart was filled with joy as I scooped Hailie into my arms and hugged her. Tears strolled down my eyes as I felt her warmth against my body. “Mommy!” she cried. Marshall came over and hugged as well. Squeezing Hailie in between me and him.

“I was with a few friends from cheerleading squad at first. Then a van started following us. It looked pretty nice; it was a shiny black with silver hood caps. It followed me for three blocks until the man started saying he knew my mother…Natalia…I wouldn’t believe Natalia would know someone as gruesome as him. It wasn’t Desmond, he’s in New Jersey along with Naomi and Nathan and it wasn’t grandpa. The man stopped the car and started chasing after me I managed to run to Grandma Renee’s house before he caught me. My cell-phone must’ve fell out of my pocket while I was running that’s why I didn’t answer. I don’t have my parents numbers memorized” Hailie gave a believable story.

I didn’t care if the cops were throwing a million questions to us; I was happy to have my little Blondie back! I held Hailie close as the police wrote down the report. She told them everything she was missing and to report them to the insurance company. After the police left Marshall and I couldn’t let Hailie out of our sight. She sat in the living room most of the day as we kept an eye from the kitchen.
