Chapter fifty-four

Marshall packed his stuff for L.A. I sat on the bed and watched him with Whitney in my arms. She wasn’t happy daddy was leaving, but he assured her that he’ll be back in a few days. I can tell Whitney never liked her father to far away. I promised her that we’ll have lots of fun together it still didn’t bring happiness to her little heart. She just wanted her daddy. She even tried to fit into Marshall’s carry-on to prove she’s not much to handle. Marshall pulled her out and planted a kiss on her cheek and handed her to me.

“Emergency numbers are on the phones in the studio and the kitchen…My mom’s number is in Hailie’s phone” Marshall said as he rushed around putting socks in the bag. “And the number for the nearest nut house is where?” I asked snickering under my breath as I was putting Whitney’s hair in braids. “That is in the-“Marshall stopped in his words and realized what I was saying and what he was going to answer. He narrowed his eyes and smiled at me. Whitney giggled, “Marshall everything will be fine” I said, as I placed my hand on his. “It’s just the first time leaving the girls alone with someone…” he said. “What you don’t trust me?” I said with my heavy Jersey accent. He chuckled, “No it’s them I don’t trust!” he giggled as he narrowed his eyes to Whitney.  “I’m mature and not native” I said. “What does native mean?” asked Whitney. “It means foolish babe” I said.

After preparing dinner which was grilled chicken and rice with lemon juice the girls migrated to the living room or bed room. “Laney is applying for college?” I asked. Marshall sighed, “Yeah she is, I don’t know what she wants to be though” he said. “She looks like the business type, she so professional on the phone and she don’t take shit from nobody” I said scrapping burnet carrots from the pan. “Hailie still has to apply I hope she does go” said Marshall. “Well, during the street fair she saw the school and everything I think she is willing to go” I said. Marshall wiped cleaned dishes and put them back. “Yeah, I don’t know I was never personally into school I got off lucky” he said. “Yeah well, in today’s working world you need a good education and the girls won’t get off so lucky like you did” I said sternly. “They will go and they can go anywhere they want” Marshall looked over to the girls. Laney was on the phone with the colleges, Hailie was texting her friends and Whitney was coloring. “Hail and Whit are still young though” Marshall added. “The hardest part will be are you willing to let them go?” I asked. Marshall cleared his throat, “I don’t know…I’m used to being away from the girls…and vice versa but college…my babies are grown” Marshall chuckled.

My heart dropped to hear Marshall’s sad chuckle, “It’ll be ok…they’ll be home for the holidays” I said. “I just hope when the day does come…I hope you’ll be there to pick me up when I have to let them go” he said under hidden tears. I smiled to myself and turned around and saw the sadness in his expression. I step forward and held his face in my hands, his eyes had a dull sadness to them, “I’ll always pick you up…” I caressed my thumb against the corner of his eyes. “I don’t know how I’m gonna do it when the time comes” he mumbled. “Stop thinking about there and think about here” I said. I could feel those emotional scares pour from his tension and sadness. Marshall wrapped his arms around me and nestled his head in my neck. “What am I gonna do when Laney will have to go?” he mumbled. “You’re going to have to trust her and know she’ll make the right decisions” I said. He sighed and pulled away “You’re right” he gave a weary smile.
