Chapter twenty-five
I returned home to Newark, New Jersey two weeks later for my dad’s funeral. I haven’t been myself, I have been so depressed. Marshall didn’t come with me, I didn’t want him too. It was me and my family. I took the bus to my apartment; I was really excited to see Wilson. “Hey Wilson I bet you-“ I look up and notice a young women bus driver. “Oh I’m sorry I must be on the wrong bus” I said, “which bus you lookin for miss?” she asked, “211 to uptown” I said, “Girl you on 211” she said. “Where, where is Wilson?” I asked.
“Natalia, baby come on the bus, we need to talk” said Ms. Mary. Ms. Mary guided me to her seat, she looked upset, “Natalia, baby…Wilson pass away” she said softly. My heart drop and I began to sob, “Oh no, poor Wilson.” Ms. Mary held me, “shh, child, shh you’re home now it’s a blessed day” said Ms. Mary. Ms. Mary held me all the ways home, “Mary, when did he die?” I asked as we got off the bus, “sometime right around you left” she said. “He was very sick” she added.
It’s mid-spring now the trees on my block were in full bloom. I opened up my apartment door, my house looked amazing, from wall to wall it was covered in flowers and little gift baskets and a banner that said, “Welcome home Natalia”. I felt happy to be at home, but yet for terrible reasons. I sighed and dropped my bags at the front door, I walk around my apartment, and it still smelled of Fabreeze. I walked into my room where my un-made bed was, I jump on it making the springs make that popping nose, I cuddled against my pillow and took a deep inhale of the smell it left.
“I’m glad you’re happy about being home” I turned over and saw my mother standing in the doorway. Her hair was tied back into a bun and she was wearing a blazer jacket with skinny jeans. She look so different, “Mama!” I cried my mom rush to my side and held my head. “Shh, shh darling shh” she said softly. “I’m sorry mama! I’m sorry!” I cried, “Its ok baby” she sobbed. “Mommy isn’t mad with you” she said.
After feeling about my home, mom and I decide to go out to eat, she didn’t ask too much about the movie or who I meet. She was more concerned about my wedding with Will; I grew annoyed about how she contently mentioned it. “Mom, what if I told you I don’t love Will anymore?” I asked. My mom stopped sipping her water bottle, her face became displeased, “What you mean, Talia?” she ask seriously. I wasn’t sure how I was going to explain it, I couldn’t blurt out I made out with Marshall; I mean Eminem.
“I don’t know being away from Will gave me some time to think” I said. “Natalia, have you been doing something with that man?” she asked, she sounded cold. “No, ma, I’m just saying what if I liked Eminem more than Will?” I asked, “Natalia, listen to you” she scoffed, and she leaned back into her chair disgusted. “Honey I let you listen to Eminem because I figured it was a phase, eventually you grew out of it, and I was right” she said calmly. “Obviously you haven’t seen my room at dad’s house, my room was covered of posters of Eminem and dad let me listen to his music” I exclaimed.
“Mom, all my life I secretly loved Eminem…it was one of those love at first sight deals”
“Natalia, Will is a good person, from a good family, you’re going to downgrade from that, too someone like Eminem?!” she exclaimed. I scoffed, “Ma, he is a good person, he just has been hurt a lot just like me” I said softly. “Oh, stop being a fucking drama queen” she shouted. She sighed, “Natalia, you’re smart don’t go for somebody like Eminem.” My heart shattered at the bitter truth. “Ma, I may not love Will the way I love Em, you may disagree with my decisions but I won’t let you ever talk about Em like he is trash” I growled.
