Chapter sixty- nine

“Happy birthday to you, happy birthday to you, happy birthday dear daddy (Marshall) happy birthday to you!” Marshall blew out his candles as he officially turned 40. It wasn’t easy to convince him to have a small cake with a few family members. Marshall held the knife and cut into the cake that said,

“Happy Birthday Marshall”

“You didn’t have to do this!” Marshall exclaimed to me.

I scoffed, “Your daughter saw the cake and wanted to buy it for you…” I kissed Marshall’s cheek.

Whitney helped me pass out cake to everyone as I pulled down my shirt that grew too small over my belly. It was extremely annoying!

The girls sat in the living room with their grandparents as I cleaned the dishes. I’ve noticed Marshall has been spending a lot of time with his dad. I smiled to myself as I saw Marshall and his dad kid around in the backyard. Looking back, Marshall has changed so much. He smiles a lot now and has developed somewhat smile lines. Marshall also developed a disguised laugh. At first; hearing Marshall laugh we all questioned who was laughing until we noticed it was Marshall. His laugh still strikes people, but not me. I know his laugh now and it brings me joy.

Everything would bother Marshall. He was filled with so much pain and hate. I held the dish towel close to me as I heard Marshall laugh from the screen door; I couldn’t help to smile to myself. Marshall came in all sweaty alongside his dad with their arms around each other’s shoulders. Marshall being sweaty made me feel a little tense. Whitney and Hailie begged Marshall SR to go out with them for some ice cream. After not much begging Marshall SR caved in and went to Dairy Queen with them. Debbie and my mom went outside to sit by the pool to feel the cool air.

It was Marshall and I in the kitchen. Marshall removed his shirt only to show his sweaty biceps. My body tense up more as he held me from behind. “Why you so tense baby?” he asked. I chuckled, “Does it take much to know?” Marshall chuckled and started kissing my neck; he moved his hands around my belly lifting my annoying shirt up after the battle of pulling it down. The shirt nestled on the edge of my belly as Marshall bent down and started to kiss it softly. It was a tender moment how he cares so much for our unborn child

“Uch um!” his mom; Marshall stood up quickly, “I-I-I was just checking the plumbing.” He chuckled nervously. “I’m going home baby” Debbie chuckled, she kissed Marshall and I goodbye. Marshall continued to caress my belly as it relaxed me. I groaned softly trying to stay awake.

“Shh relax honey” he whispered. I tried wiping the plates but I ended up placing the plate back into the water and nuzzling into Marshall’s neck. “Shhh my baby” he mumbled.

It was 3am and I had such a craving with pineapples and chocolate. Marshall couldn’t stand my tossing and turning as he tried to sleep. He came through the door wearing just his hoodie and baggy sweatpants. “This ought to cure it baby” he said as he placed the bag on the table. I hated he had to go out like that. I took the pineapples out and chocolate syrup and started guzzling it down my throat. Marshall also picked up which I’m sorry to say cucumbers. I poured the chocolate over the cucumber and ate it like it was a sundae. Marshall made looks as he found it disgusting. “I really do wish these cravings would stop I’m surprised I haven’t gagged yet” Marshall said.

“Honey you forgot the pasta salad!” I exclaimed. Marshall scoffed and took the chocolate syrup from me. He held the syrup up from his mouth and squirted the chocolate as it poured like a waterfall. I giggled, “It looks like you got some cravings going on yourself!” he tilted his head back forward and wipes his mouth with the back of his hand.

“Sometimes I feel like the pregnant one!” he exclaimed. I laughed quietly, “Has the baby kicked any?” he asked. “Not at all, I’m starting to wonder if a baby is in there” I worried. Marshall bent down and felt around my belly as he placed a kiss on my cheek. “Don’t worry the doctor said by the look of the ultrasounds; the baby is so far healthy despite the false labor pains” said Marshall. “That was a couple of weeks ago what if something could’ve happened now?” I feared.

“Baby nothing could’ve happened I’ve never seen someone so careful” Marshall exclaimed. I smiled slightly as I glared over at him, “It’ll kick soon” he assured me. Marshall got up and walked into the hall to take off his shoes. I rub my hands over my stomach like it was a crystal ball. Marshall was right; I’m worrying to much I got to stop. I got to think of the positive stuff. Marshall had a great birthday despite he’s old now! Laney is coming home for the holidays. Hailie and Whitney are doing well in school! My career is soaring! Marshall is connecting with his dad and mom. Ahh yes! This is the good life. I thought as I sat back in the chair.

RING! RING! My heart stopped as I heard the house phone ring. I turned my head slowly to Marshall as I saw his body frozen as he was about to get up. I had a lump of fear in my throat dying to come out. My worries and fears came to me like a tsunami. I was ready to tear the fucking house phone apart! “Maybe it’s the store calling to say you forgot something” I said. If only the thought could be true!

Marshall slowly picked up the phone and held it to his ear. He hesitated and answered, “H-Hello?”

“Hey Slim” it was like an angel’s voice.

Marshall sighed out of relief, “Oh Lord Dre don’t scare me like that” said Marshall. The lump in my throat vanished and I smiled as the worry started to faded. After Marshall got off the phone he smiled as he sat next to me. He grasped my hand and said, “See stop worrying now” Marshall begged. I sighed to myself.

“Ow!” I cried. I held my belly as I felt sharp pains travel through my stomach. The pain grew intense and came like someone punching my insides. It was extremely painful! “Baby what’s wrong?” Marshall exclaimed as he stood up. “Call the hospital!” I exclaimed through the pain. Marshall pulled out his cell-phone and dialed 911.
